For powerful multi-processor applications in the smallest spaces, such as are required for image and video processing in industry or medicine or as media servers in transport applications, Schroff has developed a compact MicroTCA system. This system contains six slots for the horizontal mounting of AdvancedMC single mid-size modules and a MCH (MicroTCA carrier hub). The 19" wide and 1 U high system, with a depth of 350 mm, is cooled efficiently by a hot-swap-capable fan tray with cooling unit management. Air extraction is from right to left and has been optimised by the special design of the case. In this, for example, the triangular arrangement of the lateral parts increases the effective air inlet and exhaust volumes by some 30 %. With a temperature rise of only 12.5 °C, 30 W per AdvancedMC module can be extracted plus 40 W for the MCH. The air filter is easy to exchange from the front.

The AC mains input is positioned to the rear of the system. A 250 W AC wide-range power supply unit is fitted behind the backplane. The MicroTCA-compatible power management takes the form of a mezzanine board on the rear of the backplane. The MicroTCA system is equipped with a special backplane topology that allows simultaneous use of four different software protocols. GbE is taken twice (ports 0 and 1) from the MCH to all six AdvancedMC slots. Additionally, direct connections from S-ATA or SAS are available between individual AdvancedMC slots. Direct communication with PCIe between individual AdvancedMC modules is possible by the direct connection of fat pipe ports 4 to 7. The PCIe CLK generated on the backplane is switched on by the module presence signal and provided at all slots. On the other hand, for Serial Rapid I/O or 10GbE communication the extended fat pipe ports 8 to 11 are connected in a star configuration from the MCH to all AdvancedMC slots. All AdvancedMC slots on the system are fully compatible with PIGMG AMC.0 R2.0, the Advanced Mezzanine Card base specification.
