Die COM Express Extension spezifiziert ein optimiertes Pinout für Grafiksignale und weitere Kern-Features für COM Express Designs, die auf der PICMG COM.0 COM Express Spezifikation basieren. Die jüngsten Mitglieder der COM-IG sind AAEON Technology, Aewin Technologies, Arbor Technology, Avalue Technology, Axiomtek und IBASE Technology.
Die COM Express Extension spezifiziert:
-Gemultiplexte Grafik Pin-outs zur Unterstützung von PEG, SDVO, TMDS und Display Port, um alle Chipsatz-Funktionen der der den nächsten Jahre abdecken zu können
-Erweiterte Spannungsversorgung von vormals 12 V auf 8,5 V bis 18 V
-Onboard Temperaturkontrolle sowie BIOS Erweiterungen für Smart Battery Support
-Dedizierte GPIO Pins für Energiemanagementfunktionen
-Für Legacy-Schnittstellen den nun obligatorischen Support von SUPER I/O Chips
Die COM Express Extension ist ein begleitendes Dokument zu der COM Express Spezifikation und dem COM Express Design Guide. Die COM Express Extension vereint alle Designrichtlinien für COM Express Baseboards und bricht die Vielzahl möglicher Baseboard-Designs auf die zuverlässigsten und zukunftssichersten Schaltungen herunter, die von den weltweit führenden Herstellern der COM-Technologie validiert wurden. Die Verwendung des Design Guides ist essenziell für die Entwicklung hundertprozentig optimierte Baseboard-Designs und die freie Skalierbarkeit von COM Express basierten Computer-on-Modulen.
Alle Mitglieder der neuen COM-IG erachten diese „Extension" als essenziell, um neue Grafik-Features der Chipsatzhersteller, darunter Intel®, AMD®/ATI® oder VIA®, konsistent nutzen zu können. Dieser pro-aktive Schritt der COM-IG soll sicherstellen, dass alle COM Express Lösungen herstellerunabhängig untereinander austauschbar bleiben. Die Initiative der COM-IG liegt zwar außerhalb des offiziellen PICMG Komitees, das vorgeschlagene Pinout soll jedoch der PICMG vorgelegt werden, damit es in eine überarbeitete COM Express Spezifikation einfließen kann.
