ARM A72 Multicore Vision-System
A New Generation of Fast, Robust and Long-Term Image Processing Computers
In addition to commercial products such as smartphones or tablets, ARM-based architectures are increasingly taking over the industrial market. Let´s take a look into image processing requirements which always need powerful multicore processors?
NXP (once Freescale) attends to this topic and has developed a 2GHz ARM72 8-core processor known as the LS2088, which is designed for robust 24/7 industrial applications. Imago Technologies, known as the manufacturer of the VisionBox with all the relevant interfaces for image processing, expands its platform by the VisionBox “LeMans”, which is equipped with the LS2088. The AIT with its research expertise in the field of high-performance image processing provides leading edge solutions with the VisionBox “LeMans”, amongst others also by using all optimization possibilities in the LS2088. Next generation vision systems need this performant parallelism to increase processing power as higher clock frequencies got to technological limits. Industrial environments demand embedded processing systems even for parallel architectures. In this way, an embedded real-time high-performance image processing system consisting of VisionBox “LeMans” and the networking enabled high-performance xposure camera including 2x 10 GigE Vision interfaces will be presented at the VISION 2016.
Through this flagship, the VISION will provide a chance to demonstrate that more computing power in a machine provides for a faster processing of camera data and that ever more intelligent algorithms can process images. The LS2088 of the “LeMans” will demonstrate another high performance boost.
At the VISION 2016, for the first time Imago Technologies will present the VisionBox “LeMans” including PCIe slots in a demo with the aid of Halcon, a library of image processing. This library can use the up to 8 processors as well as their NEON accelerator commands.
Imago, AIT and NXP’s goal is to operate applications which need high computing power, provide further interfaces apart from the cameras and can deliver these series on a long-term basis. Thus, components such as the processors can be delivered for longer than 10 years, which is more than twice as long compared to other vendors. As it is generally made sure that components for the boards like FPGAs are long-term available, machines and systems can be steadily delivered in series over the long term.
Choice of name for the VisionBox “LeMans”
This new generation of computers gets its name from the 24 hours race of the French city. Robustness is necessary in the industrial everyday life, as much as newest technology and speed. Since 1998, the VisionBox has been on the market. The newest flagship is to express its exclusivity also through its French name. With that said, Imago starts its company-intern race and aims at a production in series of the three platforms by the time of the 20th VisionBox anniversary (VISION 2018).
AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH
The AIT, Austria's largest non-university research institute, is among the European research institutes a specialist in the key infrastructure issues of the future. The Digital Safety & Security Department is developing cutting-edge information and communication technologies (ICT) designed to ensure safe and reliable operation of critical infrastructures. In the field of high-performance image processing the Department has a recognized position on the international technological and scientific level. More than 100 experts conduct leading edge research in focused intelligent vision systems areas such as “highperformance vision” and “3D vision and modeling” – in close collaboration with leading companies in industry and science, and the public sector. A significant competitive advantage forms the close linkage of sophisticated scientific algorithms on the one hand and technological expertise in the efficient implementation (software and dedicated hardware) on the other.
