The iChrome FLE is designed and optimized to suit many different microscopy techniques. Modulation behavior is thoroughly tested and optimized at TOPTICA, to guarantee best performance for scanning applications. With its power level and wavelength range, the unit is also a perfect fit for many non-scanning applications, like light-sheet microscopy (also known as SPIM), TIRF, spinning disk, super-resolution microscopy and many other applications.

The latest member of the iChrome family, the iChrome FLE, is designed as a "flexible laser engine" to serve the numerous and very diverse requirements in biophotonics. Up to 7 wavelengths (between 405 and 785nm) and two fiber outputs can be integrated into the iChrome FLE. The fiber outputs can be configured separately, so that individual wavelengths (e.g. UV or IR) can be corrected separately in the application. Alternatively, a fiber switch/splitter can be installed, allowing each wavelength to be switched separately to one of the two fibers, or to distribute the power between both fibers.

The numerous laser requirements from microscopy were decisive for this development. For example, some imaging techniques require multiple, switchable fiber outputs in addition to the large number of wavelengths, such as in confocal microscopy in combination with wide-field illumination (fiber switching). In other applications, such as light sheet microscopy (aka SPIM), multiple light sheets are often used, which need to be illuminated with exactly the same intensity (fiber splitter). Like all iChrome laser engines, the iChrome FLE features fully automatic adjustment, which ensures consistent laser output and easy "no screwdriver" installation.
