The deep sea has what electric car manufacturers need

(PresseBox) (Herisau, )
There are real raw material treasures in the deep sea, manganese nodules. These could act as a source of raw materials.

In addition to manganese and iron, the manganese nodules also contain copper, cobalt and nickel, as well as small amounts of platinum and rare earths. These are raw materials that are needed by steel processors, the electrical industry, and cell phone and computer manufacturers. The nodules lie at a depth of around 5,000 meters at the bottom of the sea, mainly in the Peru Basin, off the west coast of Mexico and in the Indian Ocean. And if raw material prices rise, mining at the bottom of the sea becomes increasingly attractive. The first tubers were brought to the sea surface as early as 1978. At that time, extraction was not enough to be lucrative. International regulations for this type of raw material extraction are also still lacking.

Deep-sea mining is also difficult for environmental reasons. Near Hawaii, the seabed at a depth of 3,500 to 5,500 meters is the best explored. The area, about 1,000 kilometers long, harbors more nickel, manganese and cobalt than any known area on land. The nodules are of such great interest because their composition matches that needed by electric vehicle producers. Moreover, they practically only have to be collected. In the process, however, all the bacteria and organisms that live there are sucked up along with them.

Damage to ecosystems, both plants and living organisms, is therefore feared. Whereas there are definitely positive things, such as lower greenhouse emissions than mining on land, less freshwater consumption, and there are no locals to be displaced. The ISA has not yet issued a permit for mining the manganese nodules. So, for the time being, the raw materials for electromobility will have to come from conventional mining. The lithium, for example, is available in the projects of Century Lithium and Gama Explorations.

Century Lithium's - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/century-lithium-corp/ - Clayton Valley Lithium Project in central Nevada is already at an advanced stage.

Gama Explorations' - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/gama-explorations-inc/ - properties are in Quebec and the Northwest Territories. Lithium, copper and nickel are included.
