Mining operations are to cease on August 1, 2023, in the state of Wa, Myanmar. Wa says it wants to protect its mining resources. Wa state is an unrecognized socialist state in Myanmar. But it is de facto autonomous. This mining ban now would affect about ten percent of the world's tin supply. Last year, about 77 percent of the tin concentrate imported by China came from Myanmar. Of this, the majority came from Wa. That's when fears arose about possible shortages. According to the International Tin Association, tin supplies were already tight in January and February.
Tin is needed for solders. And solders are essential for the electronics boom. Alloys often contain lead and tin and are used as soft solders. Tin is also a major alloying component for copper.
