The book was written by Miko Matsumura, Björn Brauel, and Jignesh Shah. Miko Matsumura is a Vice President and Deputy CTO at Software AG. He was the founding chair of the SOA Adoption Blueprints Technical Committee at Oasis and is the organizer of the SOA Link Interoperability Initiative. Miko regularly speaks throughout the world on SOA issues, and blogs at blog.softwareag.com. Björn Brauel, also a Vice President and Deputy CTO, is an expert in large scale customer deployments and adapting the lifecycle of SOA. He focuses on SOA, BPM, and integration technologies dealing with XML and Web services. Jignesh Shah is Vice President of SOA Product Management and Marketing and works closely with customers around the globe on deployment of real-life SOA initiatives.
"Leading enterprises have understood how to use SOA to be more competitive and costeffective," said Shah. "While SOA pundits and theoreticians hype and debate SOA methodologies and technologies, the IT leaders at these enterprises are rolling up their sleeves and making real progress with SOA. Our goal was to take what works and lay it out in practical and actionable terms."
Drawing on the authors' real-world experience of hundreds of SOA projects, SOA Adoption for Dummies zeroes in on the practical implementation of SOA. The authors stress that this is not just another SOA Architecture book, but rather about SOA Adoption, the concrete practices that lead to successful implementations. The book introduces "SOA Rocket Science", an adoption approach that emphasizes coordination between the technical and organizational aspects of adoption. This approach is designed to get implementers across the "SOA Danger Zone", emphasizing measurement, organizational motivation and IT process automation. In eleven chapters the book describes how to successfully introduce SOA in an enterprise. "SOA orbit" beckons at the end.
"We have reached the tipping point for market acceptance of SOA," said Matsumura. "The early adopters have completed both pilot and implementation phases. We wanted to distill the experiences of the early adopters into an easy-to-read handbook so that the majority of SOA implementers who are getting started or midstream now can benefit from their experiences."
Early praise for SOA Adoption for Dummies includes:
"Software AG's SOA experts have made a timely contribution to SOA Adopters with this clearlywritten guide. Their 'SOA Rocket Science' is a pragmatic approach that clearly comes from the authors' strong foundation in real-world SOA engagements." Ronald Schmelzer, Senior Analyst of ZapThink LLC.
