The new Schmid Group plant in Zhuhai/China was officially inaugurated at 10.48 a.m. on December 2, 2008. Following the official ceremony and traditional Lion Dance, the tape was cut to mark the opening in the presence of Dieter C. Schmid, Christian Schmid and Annette Schmid, the Consul General of Guandong Province, the Deputy Mayor of Zhuhai city and the Director of the Zhuhai Free Trade Zone, as well as about 200 invited guests from home and abroad.
Mr. Christian Schmid's speech addressed the global economic situation and raised the question whether such an investment was the right move in the light of the present business conditions. This was answered with a clear "Yes". In his speech Christian Schmid said that the strategy of the Schmid Group was geared to the long term and that times such as these called for giving people encouragement and sending a message. He continued saying that this was not a production plant erected in a traditional, plain style for short-term profit maximization. The design was in compliance with Schmid's high standards and conveyed to the visitor the company's focus on quality and esteem for the personnel working there. He added that Zhuhai would become Schmid's Asia- Pacific headquarters. The numerous guests were deeply impressed by the commitment displayed by the Schmid Group. The first orders for the new plant in Zhuhai were placed the very same day.
The appearance, functionality and size make the plant an imposing spectacle for which incredible volumes of material were used. A production hall 200 meters long and 50 meters wide, and a glazed, 6-floor office building are to provide workspace for up to 500 employees. It goes without saying that the entire production area and the office tract are air-conditioned and fulfill the latest ergonomic requirements, as one would expect of a modern plant in Germany.
