Stollberg passes environmental audit

Oberhausen works produces granulated casting fluxes for the steel industry in line with environmental standards

(PresseBox) (Oberhausen, )
In November, the Stollberg Division of S&B Industrial Minerals GmbH, which is undergoing an environmental certification initiative covering its worldwide production facilities, successfully completed its first environmental certification audit and a quality surveillance audit of its casting flux production in granulate and powder form. With this the company has proven one more time that eco-friendly and resource-saving production of granulated casting fluxes is reality.

During November 2007, Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) reviewed the environmental management system of the Stollberg Division within the framework of an ISO 14001 certification audit. For the review of the quality management system an ISO 9001 surveillance audit was conducted. LRQA has now awarded Stollberg the certification that its Oberhausen production facilities comply with these two ISO standards.
During the audit Stollberg could convincingly prove that the requirements of the two standards have been successfully integrated into the existing man-agement system and that the system now fulfils the criteria of the applicable standards.
The certification is an important element of S&B Industrial Minerals’ strategic commitment to environmental protection and energy saving. The Group is vigorously pursuing the goal of “zero discharge”: all solid residues and by-products as well as the waste water are to be completely recycled within the works.
Jürgen Sardemann, General Manager of the Stollberg Division, emphasizes the importance of having the eco-friendliness of the production processes certified. “All of us have a responsibility for our environment. By completely recycling all intermediate products from our processes we avoid dumping of waste. But also the containment of dust generation at the workplace and the minimization of emissions released to the vicinity of our facilities are impor-tant issues for us”.
In June 2007 Stollberg brought the third spray tower for the production of granulated casting fluxes on stream in Oberhausen. The new plant had become necessary in order to satisfy the growing demand of the steel industry for environment-friendly, innovative products for liquid steel casting.
The comprehensive environmental management system, which Stollberg had already introduced before the certification, has produced impressive results: already in the first half of 2007 gas consumption could be reduced by almost 14 percent.
The quality management system of the company was first certified in 1991 accord-ing to the then valid ISO standard. Since then this standard has been constantly expanded into the successor standard ISO 9001:2000. This development has culminated in the concurrent certification of environmental and quality management systems. Both standards have been combined into a common EHSQ (environ-mental, health, safety and quality) management system. It even considers impor-tant aspects of health and safety management in line with ISO 18001.
Stollberg’s Durgapur works in India was already certified last August. Audits for the other Stollberg works are under preparation. The certificate for Stollberg do Brasil is expected to be awarded in April 2008.
