How the unified converter family Unidrive M from Control Techniques lowers the engineering expenses - current interview in the Quest Trend Magazine

The engineering expenses of the machine-builders for machine automation rose distinctly since 2007. In the interview Control Techniques describes how Unidrive's M uniformity and modularity are lowering the engineering expenses.

(PresseBox) (Bochum, )
In the context of the market survey from Quest TechnoMarketing about the engineering of machine automation 70% of the machine-builders indicated that engineering expenses rose by about 50% since 2007 until today.

Rainer Crevecoeur, General Manager Germany, underlines mainly three points in the interview how Unidrive M is reducing these engineering expenses.

Unidrive M is a modular structured, six-level frequency converter family for 0.25 kW to 2.8 MW with scalable hardware adapted to applications, technologies and a standardized software to control asynchronous, synchronous, servo drives as well as linear actuators or to use them as AFE. A broad range of option modules are provided to optimize the applications; programming is made by standardized software based on Codesys. The crucial factor at this point to reduce engineering expenses is consistent complete uniformity.

Secondly the uniformity of Unidrive M puts second and third suppliers aside and the related higher engineering expenses. The market survey revealed that machine-builders are more willing to change drive converters. An observation could contribute to the explanation Rainer Crevecoeur stated in the interview that machine-builders see themselves forced to use second and third suppliers because none of the suppliers concerned covers all required applications. So the broad range of the converter family and its complete uniformity saves two and three-way engineering of external solutions.

Finally the third point to lower engineering expenses is related to the fact that the machine-builder can cover standard applications through standard technologies up to complex adapted solutions by only one converter family with unified software. Also at this point the machine-builder is not forced to change over to other makes causing additional engineering expenses.

Rainer Crevecoeur confirms that Control Techniques is well-known for drive technology and is in addition at the same time a part of the worldwide Emerson enterprise resp. Emerson Industrial Automation. In the near future Emerson Industrial Automation will become, beyond the drive technology, a supplier of automation solutions. So Emerson Industrial Automation will provide automation solutions, i.e. PC-based control technology, HMI, I/O level. Individual frequency converter modules provide already now integrated control technology and motion control, i.e. distributed control technology. So the enhancement will ensure central and distributed automation solutions for the machine-builder.
