In the past, anyone who wanted to follow a sailing regatta from the shore needed a lot of imagination because of lack of TV coverage. Thanks to special SAP software from the Cloud, sailing fans and teams can now view these competitions live while keeping their feet dry. Users access the Sailing Analytics software from SAP over the internet and watch the race unfold as an animation on their notebooks, smart phones or tablets. Pironet NDH provides the software itself from its Business Cloud.
The SAP analysis software from the Cloud evaluates the measurement data which permanent sensors and GPS transmitters supply from the boats. The data includes the wind speed, location and speed of the boats, and how quickly the crews complete their manoeuvres. The data is transferred to a receiver station on land by mobile radio.
High-performance infrastructure on request
SAP AG has for years been involved in the sport of sailing as a sponsor. The company commissioned Pironet NDH to operate the application for the first time at the SAP 505 World Championship, the world championship for two-man dinghies, off La Rochelle, France, in July 2012. The solution will also be used at numerous sailing events this year, for example at the Kieler Woche, and at the SAP 505 World Championship, which will be contested in St. James, Barbados, from 22 April to 3 May 2013.
One of the biggest challenges here is that, in particular at major events such as world championships, many thousand fans want to experience live how their favourite teams are faring. The Cloud infrastructure operating in the background must be correspondingly robust and reliable when processing the data from the boats in real time for the viewers. However, outside the season this high-performance environment is not required. In this period, the costs incurred by the operator should be as low as possible.
