Precisely Targeted Treatment on 6 Legs

Karlsruhe, (PresseBox) - Treating tumors with X-rays or particle beams is now state of the art. It involves the local application of high intensities of radiation in order to destroy the cancer cells. The radiation field must be very precisely positioned in order that the treatment is successful and as little surrounding tissue as possible is damaged.

Physik Instrumente (PI) has developed the M-850KPAH special Hexapod especially for this application. It can move loads of up to 200 kg - in this case a treatment table - in six degrees of freedom with high precision.

Travel ranges of 100 mm horizontal travel and 50 mm vertical travel and tilt angles of up to 6° are matched to this task. Brakes fix the hexapod in its final position. The parallel kinematics system is conveniently controlled via an Ethernet connection. As with all PI Hexapods, the position can be entered with commands in Cartesian coordinates.
