Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) have ordered an additional 20 "M 5000" high-floor light rail cars from consortium partners Bombardier Transportation and Vossloh Kiepe. The option is a component of the original contract from 2007.
Initially this contract covered eight Bombardier Flexity Swift vehicles. Over the last years, additional vehicles have been regularly ordered as options agreed upon in the contract. Counting the newly ordered 20 vehicles, TfGM has now ordered a total of 94 light rail vehicles.
Vossloh Kiepe will supply the electrical equipment, the heating, air conditioning and ventilation equipment as well as the engine transmission units. Specific TfGM requirements were taken under special consideration during the development of the vehicles. So the "M 5000" has a special static converter (BNU 524) characterized by its energy-efficient high frequency circuit technology which leads to increased performance at a reduced weight.
