Solar process heat for environmentally friendly paint shops

DÜRR, one of the leading suppliers for automobile manufacturing technology, and INDUSTRIAL SOLAR, a specialist for solar process heat collectors combine forces and expertise to provide solar process heat for sustainable paint shops.

(PresseBox) (Freiburg, ) The Eco+Paintshop from Dürr is a synonym for a paint shop, which reduces the demand for energy and materials as well as the resultant emissions. The cooperation contract between Industrial Solar GmbH (ISG) and Dürr AG clearly fits into this concept very well.

Industrial Solar GmbH (ISG) specializes in the development, production and marketing of Fresnel solar collectors used to generate industrial process heat. The compact, low-maintenance Fresnel collectors concentrate sunlight and are very efficient. The potential for solar thermal generated process heat is enormous, especially in countries having an annual direct normal irradiance of more than 1500 kWh/m2. The energy won can be utilized in numerous ways within the most diverse industrial production processes.

ISG is the ideal partner for Dürr and its energy-optimized Eco+Paintshop. Dürr is able to generate process heat of up to 400°C using ISG’s high performance collectors. Large savings can therefore be made, particularly in the operation of ovens, which require temperatures of up to 220°C. As an example, in sunny locations such as Tanger in Morocco, between 30% and 50% of the energy required for the paint shop’s drying ovens can be gained from solar energy. A significant annual reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 1,000 tons also contributes to low emission production and at the same time, non-renewable resources are conserved. There are other benefits too: as the solar collectors are mounted on the roof and reflect the sun’s rays, the paint shop does not heat up so much – this means that the building requires less energy for cooling.

Dürr’s Eco+Paintshop places sustainability and environmental awareness firmly in the center of the stage. In addition to the utilization of well-proven technologies, such as the EcoDryScrubber dry paint separation system and the rotational dip process, Ecopaint RoDip, solar process heat generation with the aid of high performance collectors represents yet another step towards improved ecological and economical efficiency.

Primary energy and other resources are scarce and costly nowadays and are targeted for reduction in the optimization process of companies. In addition, emissions and residues should also be reduced significantly.
Dürr has investigated all processes in a paint shop with respect to efficiency and found further ways to contribute to sustainable and eco-friendly with the Fresnel collector from ISG. With its Eco+Paintshop, Dürr provides an energetically optimized paint shop, offering not only high environmental compatibility, but also considerably reducing the final cost per unit, therefore extending their competitive edge even further.

With a temperature range of up to 400 °C and a thermal power range of up to double-digit Megawatts, this highly efficient solar process heat system is perfectly suited for use in a great variety of industrial applications and for air-conditioning large buildings. The potential for solar process heat is enormous: roughly two thirds of the final energy demand of industry is process heat. In addition, the energy demand for air-conditioning is on a constantly increasing worldwide. The combination of several thermally driven applications in so-called polygeneration systems is even more attractive: one system providing process heat, electricity, cooling and water desalination.

Industrial Solar GmbH, which is located in Freiburg (Germany), was initially founded as a spin-off of PSE AG under the umbrella of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE). The company has specialized in concentrating solar-thermal technology since 1999. First pilot collector installations were commissioned in 2005.
