New System Storage DS4700 Express Models Address Data Intensive Customer Segment, Including Video Streaming and Medical Archiving

(PresseBox) (ARMONK, NY, )
IBM today announced the IBM® System Storage™ DS4700 Express, a high-bandwidth storage system featuring industry leading
front- to back-end four gigabits per second (Gbps) technology.

Aimed at and priced for small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), the new midrange storage system is designed for clients who need faster access to their business critical information, and expands upon IBM’s leadership in high-bandwidth storage technology and helping customers build information on demand environments. It was one year ago that IBM introduced the System Storage DS4800, its first storage system featuring 4 Gbps capabilities.

SMBs are now required to manage data at a level once reserved for larger organizations. These include Web companies featuring streaming video to medical companies faced with image and record archiving. The DS4700 is designed to help these companies lower their costs by accomplishing more work with less storage infrastructure through faster data access, faster backups, as well as faster restoring, copying and mirroring of data.

“Small to medium sized clients are faced with the same challenges as large enterprises, which is to cost effectively manage and run the increasing flood of complex data applications, says Kristie Bell, vice president, IBM System Storage. The DS4700 Express hits the sweet spot for response time and performance, by offering customers an outstanding, affordable midrange option.”

The IBM System Storage DS4700 Express series is designed to provide users with increased connectivity, including 16 disk drive bays inside the controller and up to 8 host ports, reducing the need for a switch to be incorporated into the network. To handle up to 112 disk drives, customers have the option of attaching either the EXP710 or the recently announced EXP810 expansion unit to the back-end. Available in two versions, the Model 70 and Model 72 feature different amounts of cache and number of host ports. Also, a new 4Gb disk drive option (15,000 RPM) is available on the DS4700.

The DS4700 is fully-enabled with unique DACstore technology, which enables dynamic, data-intact portability on every drive in the subsystem. It is also designed to provide end-to-end 4 Gbps-capable support when using the new System p5 single and dual port 4 Gbps Fibre Channel HBA available in both AIX 5L and Linux on Power. The combination of System p5 and System Storage provide an end-to-end set of solutions designed to help maximize infrastructure investment.

The 4 Gbps Fibre Channel interfaces are designed to auto negotiate down to
1 Gbps and 2 Gbps for backward compatibility. It can also be upgraded to the DS4800. The interoperability of the DS4700 with older 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps infrastructures helps customers to continue to derive value from their past technology investments as they upgrade to new systems.

Pricing and Availability
The products announced today will be available starting June 9, 2006. The IBM System Storage DS4700 is available with starting list prices of $19,449. The pricing includes a 3-year warranty on hardware and software.

Information On Demand
The desire by businesses to access, manage and deliver information more efficiently is driving rapid change in the IT marketplace. Companies that are grappling with new government mandates and business demands are striving to capture and integrate information in a more seamless, real-time fashion across the enterprise. IBM's information on demand approach combines deep business insight with open standards, advanced storage systems, and sophisticated software to manage and secure information as a service to create efficient, cost effective and flexible information infrastructures. Regardless of industry, IBM helps companies transform data into insight to enable information on demand.
