During the International Building Exhibition 2013 in Hamburg, several large building projects are underway in the borough of "Wilhelmsburg Mitte". Typically, the use of HANNO materials can be seen at two interesting building projects.

For over a hundred years, the three letters "IBA" have been the logo of "Internationale Bauausstellung" - International Building Exhibition. However, IBA is not a typical exhibition; it is a research and development forum for new, innovative building projects. New urban development concepts for different requirements and environmental conditions are designed here.

The focus at the Hamburg IBA is the "Metropolis IBA". In this case, the "laboratory" is a part of a borough of the city. Concepts of how people can live and work in future are developed. How can energy issues and space problems be solved, how can living and working be reconciled?

Research, planning and building have been going on in Hamburg for totally seven years. This year will see the great final presentation on the Elbe island of Wilhelmsburg.

The world's first building with a bioreaction front: The BIQ

The "BIQ" was designed as part of the "Smart Material Houses" project under which material systems are developed that react and adapt to changes in environmental conditions. Under this concept developed together by the firms SPLITTERWERK, Label der Bildenden Kunst (Graz), Arup GmbH (Berlin), Ingenieure B+G (Frankfurt) and Immosolar GmbH (Hamburg), microalgae grow under a curtain facade. The algal population is supplied with nutrients by a separate water circulation system, the algae grow under the effect of sunlight. Algae are harvested in regular intervals and converted to biogas in the BIQ's technical equipment room. The biogas produced from the algae provides the basis for the generation of electricity and heat in a condensing boiler. In addition, light not absorbed by the algae is converted into heat to heat the water or provide heating energy for the House, alternatively, it can be stored in holes drilled to a depth of 80 meters and filled with brine.

This makes "BIQ" not only self-sufficient in energy from biological resources, it also supplies energy to Energieverbund Wilhelmsburg Mitte in which energy generating plants of different buildings work together in a "virtual" power plant.

Hybrid house to live and work in

One of the projects is "Hybrid development" by Bieling Architekten: Their house was completed in 13 months and consumes 30 % less energy than prescribed by the EnEV (Energy Saving Ordinance) of 2009. People live and work in the same house but the different areas are clearly apart from each other. Conflicts of use should be avoided in any case. Separate entrances to both use areas and intelligent grid systems for horizontal and vertical combinations are typical of the design of that house. In this way, separate units accessible by different stairwells can be combined into one unit to serve as living and working spaces within a single unit.

High demands on window sealing quality

The high requirements on the windows installed in these buildings were solved in an excellent way by a window contractor.

HANNO application engineers visited the building sites during the execution phase of the projects. Instead of placing the windows in the masonry, they were integrated in the insulation level, which changed the requirements on fastening and sealing the windows or made requirements even stricter.

In such an installation situation, the traditional principle of sealing all three levels is still required, but - with respect to the heat insulation level - is solved by the heat insulation composite system. Sealing is provided in that the windows are connected to the masonry by a flashing tape.

The advantage of a flashing tape seal in the insulation level is that the insulating material of the front can be installed right to the window so that the thermal bridge is minimized and the execution optimum. During the building phase, the flashing tape acts as outer seal whereas later when the heat insulation material and the driving rain proof seal between the exterior plaster and the window have been applied, it acts as inner seal.

The newly developed HANNO®-Duo Easy flashing tape is excellently suited for such challenges. After intensive product development, a flashing tape pasted to the full surface was developed which with moisture-depending diffusion behavior and an sd of approximately 0.4 to 12 m was the ideal candidate to live up to the requirements of the two building projects on the Elbe island of Wilhelmsburg.

By proving the passive house suitability in the optimization of heat bridges, HANNO had defined a new standard already at the fensterbau/frontale 2012 in Nürnberg. Thus, HANNO has the suitable materials for the best possible sealing of window connection joints for both ambitious projects in Hamburg.
