Gartner Says Worldwide Server Market Showing Signs of Stabilisation In Spite Of Yearly Declines in Shipments of 17.1 Per Cent and Revenues of 15.5 Per Cent

(PresseBox) (Stamford, Conn., )
Worldwide server shipments for the third quarter of 2009 dropped 17.1 per cent over the same quarter last year, while worldwide server revenue for the same period declined 15.5 per cent according to Gartner, Inc. Worldwide server revenues totalled $10.7 billion for the quarter, as worldwide servers shipments reached 1.2 million units.

"It is important to put the yearly declines into perspective," said Jeffrey Hewitt, research vice president at Gartner. "Looking at the third quarter results from the sequential perspective, they showed an increase of 13.8 per cent in shipments and 10.2 per cent in revenues when compared with the second quarter of this year. That suggests that the market as a whole is showing signs of stabilisation as we move towards the end of 2009."

IBM held the revenue lead in the worldwide server market for the quarter (see Table 1). IBM's overall revenue share lead over secondplace HP was 1.5 per cent for the quarter. Four of the top five vendors posted doubledigit declines in revenue year over year. However, all of the toptier vendors experienced sequential revenue growth, except for Sun Microsystems.

In server shipments, Hewlett-Packard retained its worldwide server shipment lead, as its market share reached 32.1 per cent in the third quarter of 2009. Dell maintained the No. 2 ranking as its share totalled 22.8 per cent (see Table 2). HP's shipment performance was driven primarily by its ProLiant brands.

While the global server providers all posted yearonyear shipment declines for the quarter, all of the vendors experienced sequential shipment increases for the period.

In Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), server shipments totalled more than 526,000 units in the third quarter of 2009, a decline of 22.9 per cent from the same period last year (see Table 4), Server revenue totalled $3 billion in the third quarter of 2009, a decline of 22.8 per cent from the same quarter last year (see Table 3).

"The market saw sequential shipment growth of 7 per cent compared with the previous quarter, the largest secondtothirdquarter growth since 1998," said Errol Rasit, senior research analyst at Gartner. "Although the market was still constrained as virtualisation remained a top priority to increase efficiency and reduce server spend, the server market showed a doubledigit yearonyear decline in the third quarter of 2009."

In the x86 market, total volumes in EMEA declined 22 per cent compared with the third quarter of 2008. Of the top five vendors, HP maintained its No. 1 position exhibiting a decline of 19 per cent. Dell and IBM in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions respectively showed 23 and 31 per cent decline respectively, the largest declines of the top five vendors. Fujitsu in the No. 4 spot saw a slightly smaller decline of 16 per cent, while Sun moved up to the No. 5 position exhibiting a 9 per cent decline. As IBM and Dell continue to show improvements in the x86 market, HP's dominance will be further challenged.

RISC and Itanium UNIX revenues declined 35 per cent in the third quarter of 2009. Year on year, HP maintained its leading position and declined 35 per cent. Although IBM showed yearonyear decline, it continued to show aboveaverage performance in this segment and gained No. 2 position in the third quarter of 2009. Of the top five vendors in this segment, Fujitsu and Sun showed the weakest performances with a decline of 73 and 42 per cent respectively. Sun continued to suffer from the delay of its acquisition by Oracle while Fujitsu shifted its focus to its x86 portfolio.

In server shipments, HP maintained its No.1 position, marginally increasing its share by 1.7 percentage points compared with the third quarter of 2008. Although all the top five server vendors saw a decline yearonyear, three vendors, HP, Fujitsu and Dell managed to grow or maintain their market share yearonyear.

"As 2009 draws to a close, the outlook for the server market in EMEA for the fourth quarter is for slightly improved results sequentially, increasing the chance of a return to growth in 2010," concluded Mr Rasit.
