EMC maintained the No. 1 spot overall, finishing the quarter at 24.3 per cent market share (see Table 1). IBM was in second place with 14.1 per cent of the market followed by Hewlett-Packard with 11.8 per cent.
Sun Microsystems showed the highest growth year-over-year at 34.7 per cent mainly due to a large increase in the company's Sun StorageTek 2000, 6000 and 9000 series revenue. NetApp had the next highest growth with 22.9 per cent. Also recording double-digit growth were Dell with 18.3 per cent, Hitachi Data Systems at 18.1 per cent, EMC at 16.0 per cent, and IBM with a growth of 14.9 per cent.
On a regional basis, Japan showed the highest growth at 38.7 per cent year-over-year followed by Latin America, Europe Middle East and Africa, and Asia/Pacific at 25.2 per cent, 22.3 per cent and 16.6 per cent, respectively. Growth in North America for the same period was 12.7 per cent.
"Although growth in North America was lower than the other regions it was still very respectable at almost 13 per cent given the current economic conditions," said Robin Burke, research vice president for Gartner's global Storage Quarterly Statistics programme.
