Strenx™ Performance Steel From SSAB Helps Fassi Obtain New Levels Of Crane Performance

(PresseBox) (Albino, Bergamo, )
Strenx™ performance steel, from SSAB, has allowed the Italian crane manufacturer Fassi to develop a new knuckle boom crane that is significantly lighter, while obtaining new levels of performance.

For its new F2150RAL crane, Fassi chose to use the high strength and ultra high strength steels Strenx 1100 and Strenx 900 from SSAB in the lifting arms and crane booms. The result was a revolution in heavy-weight knuckle boom cranes, which can now be installed on 4-axle trucks.

The F2150RAL crane stands out for its ability to combine exceptional lifting performance with a machine body that keeps structural dimensions to a minimum and limits tare weight. It has a lifting class of 160 tm / 1570 kNm and a maximum reach of 41.30 m with jib that was made possible thanks to Strenx.

Strenx is designed for areas where structural strength and weight reduction are important competitive factors. The research and development department of Fassi in partnership with SSAB worked together to co-engineer new applications with extremely advanced mechanical solutions.

"The constant commitment to be at the forefront of innovation is a priority of our entire organization. Proposing new, more efficient crane models of excellent quality is essential to remaining the market leader. This is possible thanks to business partners with extensive experience and expertise, such as SSAB. With Strenx, the Nordic group has reached extraordinary levels of performance,” explains Giovanni Fassi, CEO Fassi Gru S.p.A

The development of the new Fassi crane was focused on improving the power to weight ratio, without sacrificing reliability or safe operation limits.

“Strenx is not just any steel. It is a material that is the result of more than 100 years of steel making experience within SSAB. We are constantly developing our products based on our own beliefs and our customers’ needs, and push the boundaries of what is possible, every day. The combination of Strenx and the expertise of Fassi has allowed for new levels of performance and reduced operating costs for the F2150RAL crane,” explains Magnus Carlsson, Product Manager Strenx, SSAB Special Steels.

Strenx provides high toughness, good welding and bending properties as well as good consistency in terms of physical, chemical and mechanical properties.

“We have worked with large truck cranes for years. Recently, we are replacing some of them with articulated cranes. We can do many kinds of work with the Fassi F2150RAL folding boom system and winch, which used to require 160-ton mobile cranes. The arms of their small jib combined with the use of winches allow you to perform complex operations that are otherwise impractical," says Juha Koponen, CEO Kurko-Koponen

The new F2150RAL crane can be seen operating in a construction site near Helsinki, Finland in a recently produced video highlighting the cooperation between SSAB and Fassi.
