New Concepts for Drive Belts

(PresseBox) (Hannover, )

- ContiTech belts open up new possibilities in machine and plant engineering
- Timing belts are maintenance-free and reduce operating costs
- Lighter weight yields better energy efficiency
- Hygienic conditions are adhered to more closely

Drive belts have become an indispensable component of modern machine and plant engineering. Their chief advantages are higher energy efficiency, a maintenance-free quality and cost savings.

Visitors to the Hannover Messe can experience these advantages live at the ContiTech booth (E23 in hall 25).

Take the example of heavy-duty belts. "Heavy-duty types are making inroads into ever more application areas. Their material features allow for a narrower design than for conventional belts. This in turn makes possible more compact drives. Since the belts are lighter in weight for the same output, less mass has to be moved for the same drive," explains Holger D. Menssen, Industrial product manager in the ContiTech Power Transmission Group. Heavy-duty belts thus contribute to greater energy efficiency. There are further advantages to be had by turning to belts as a drive solution. Unlike chains or systems of paired sprockets, timing belts are maintenance-free because they don't have to be lubricated - an added argument in tough economic times.

Applications that used only steel cables for a long time now frequently operate powered by drive belts. Flat belts from ContiTech are, for example, in use in elevators. The cars are not suspended on a complex steel cable construction. They are operated, instead, by means of specialpurpose belts from ContiTech. The advantages: The elevators are much more eco-nomical and simpler to install; architecturally, they make minimal space demands. Five steel-reinforced polyurethane belts are enough to hold a 1,000-kg car. Every single one of them is three-millimeters thin and three-centimeters narrow, with a host of small, extremely strong steel cables laced through them. The material is so flexible and pliant as to even allow for drive solutions that are around seventy percent smaller and thus more economical than conventional steel designs involving cables and pulleys.

"Belts are also the better choice in applications in which the use of lubricants might pose hygienic problems," says Menssen. For that reason belts power not only grain mills and coffee machines. They demonstrate their versatility even in lidding machines used to seal jars. On a continuously moving conveyor belt, the filled jars pass through the machine, where they are loosely lidded with caps. The jars are sealed shut with the help of two parallel specialpurpose belts from ContiTech that run at different speeds over the caps. Under a sealing shoe the belts press down on the lids still loosely in place on the jars. The fact that the belts are operating at different speeds seals the jars. "Under no circumstances may the decoration on the lid be damaged in the process. This is a requirement that is easy to satisfy with belts," explains Menssen.

The examples illustrate what a diverse range of application areas belts already fill these days. The broad range of drive belts for industrial applica-tions that ContiTech offers makes this possible, as does the option of customer-driven solutions. ContiTech is continuously at work to develop new belt solutions. These will further broaden the possibilities for machine and plant engineering in the future.
