The USB-2.0 adapter is supplied by the PC via the USB interface. Thanks to the clever thoughtthrough energy management and the use of a lowpower FPGA, the power requirement of the adapter itself is comparably low. Therefore, it is able to provide up to 2 W of electrical power in order to supply sensors or actors connected to the bus segment.
The USB-2.0 adapter is based on a digital circuit, developed by icdesign. This circuit represents the entire functional range of a USB-2.0 device interface in hardware. The BiSS bus interface is then connected to this USB core via a bridge. It goes without saying that the USB-2.0 adapter developed by icdesign also supports the new BiSS C-Mode.
The new BiSS C-Mode (Continuous-Mode) allows for a simultaneous transmission of position data, register access and control commands - without any need for modem reselection of gaps in transmission. Thus, BiSS C-Mode considerably simplifies the design of motor feedback systems.
The BiSS sensor actor interface (the coinage BiSS stands for bidirectional/serial/synchronous) is a bidirectional realtime interface for the fast, serial and reliable communication between sensors and actors. Originally developed by iC-Haus GmbH, Bodenheim (Germany), BiSS has become an open standard that is available worldwide. Its main application is linking position sensors to controllers and fast control units. In many cases, RS485 is the physical layer of a BiSS bus system, but it can also be implemented on TTL or LVDS interfaces (LVDS: Low Voltage Differential Signalling - an interface standard for highspeed data transmission).
icdesign was entirely responsible for the USB 2.0 adapter hardware as well as for the software routines that are required to control the adapter from the PC side. iC-Haus combined this development with its BiSS C-Mode-Interface IP as well as with a GUI (Graphical User Interface) for the PC that calls the software routines developed by icdesign.
Company profile of iC-Haus GmbH
iC-Haus GmbH is a leading, independent Germany manufacturer of standard integrated circuits (ASSPs) and customerspecific ASiC-Solutions, acting worldwide. Since 1984, iC-Haus has been specialising in the development, manufacturing and distribution of applicationspecific integrated circuits (iCs) for industrial, automotive and medical products. The company's IP libraries in bipolar, CMOS and BCD technologies are suitable for the design of sensor, laser/opto and actuator ASiCs.
The iCs are either assembled in standard plastic housings or use the chiponboard technology also for complete microsystems, multichip modules or with sensors as optoBGATM Further information can be obtained from the Internet: http://www.ichaus.de.
