EPIC Alliance Discusses MR Conditional Devices and Best Practices at Europace-Cardiostim 2017

International, All-Woman Faculty Deliberates Clinical Workflow at Scientific Symposium

VIENNA, Austria and BERLIN, Germany, (PresseBox) - Physicians exchanged ideas on MR conditional devices in the scientific symposium “Clinical Decision Making in Electrophysiology/ Arrhythmias” at the Europace-Cardiostim 2017 congress today. The panel represented an all-female faculty of electrophysiologists from the EPIC Alliance, sponsored by BIOTRONIK.

The recent technological breakthrough in MR conditional devices means patients can access crucial MRI scans. “Events like this symposium are vital,” explained EPIC Alliance steering committee member Dr. Jeanne Poole, University of Washington, Seattle, US. “There should be a continuous interchange on best practices before and after MRI scans. It’s important to have excellent collaboration between radiologists and cardiologists, and all parties need to be informed of options to ease workflow.”

Possibilities to streamline physician workflow include BIOTRONIK’s award-winning MRI AutoDetect feature, which enables the device to automatically recognize when it is in an MRI environment. Meanwhile, the online tool ProMRI® Check allows physicians to check the MR conditionality of BIOTRONIK systems.

  • “Extracting Abandoned Leads: Is a Need for an MRI Scan a Good Enough Reason?” by Dr. Ulrika Birgersdotter-Green, University of California San Diego, California, US
  • “How Do We Manage Our Patients with Non-MR Conditional Devices?” by Dr. Marye Gleva, Washington University, Saint Louis, Missouri, US
  • “MRI Scanning: Establishing a Practical and Safe System in Your Hospital” by Dr. Andrea Russo, Cooper University Hospital, Camden, New Jersey, US
Steering committee member Dr. Birgersdotter-Green added, “Today’s symposium featured a global faculty, which is very important when it comes to learning from each other. The issues discussed during the session are topical for the entire cardiology community. Admittedly though, women remain drastically underrepresented as speakers in congresses.”
