BASF is a leading supplier of propionic acid with production facilities at Ludwigshafen, Germany and Nanjing, China. The major application of this organic acid is feed grain preservation. It is also widely used in the production of vitamin E and in the fields of pharmaceuticals, crop protec-tion agents, solvents, food preservatives and plastics. Feed grain pres-ervation based on propionic acid offers clear economic and ecological benefits over other methods, as an eco-efficiency analysis by BASF demonstrates. It shows that using this acid to preserve feed grain is much more eco-efficient than feed grain preservation by means of drying or storage in air-tight silos. BASF markets propionic-acid-based pre-servatives under the trade names Lupro-Grain and Luprosil.
