Starting 09 February 2019, pharmaceutical companies within the EU will be required to ensure that a unique and valid serial number is displayed on drug packaging that can be verified by the given country's own national verification system. Millions of serial numbers must, therefore, be provided, printed and safely communicated for a variety of different authentication methods. It is clear that the establishment of an appropriate technical infrastructure represents a major challenge for manufacturers, distributors and producers.
