Wincor Nixdorf wins top rating for sustainability report

Wincor Nixdorf has compiled its first sustainability report and had it certified to the internationally recognized GRI standard (Global Research Initiative). The report for fiscal year 2010/2011 was awarded an A+, the best rating, first time round.

According to a KPMG survey conducted among the 3,400 highest-selling companies in 34 countries in the year 2011, 69 percent of these enterprises already operate according to the GRI guidelines, while as many as 80 percent of the world's 250 biggest companies see the GRI standard as a major factor influencing their operations.

A sustainability report is held to be a key gage of how seriously a company takes sustainable business practices. GRI assessed Wincor Nixdorf's sustainability report with reference to the three central areas: ecology, economy and social aspects. In the process, it used over 100 indicators to measure the transparency of all aspects of sustainability at Wincor Nixdorf. Specific indicators relating to the economic, ecological and social aspects of the company's activities, products and services were also considered. In the area of ecology, for example, they cover such aspects as materials deployment, energy saving, emissions and waste. In the area of economy, they focus on economic performance and market presence. And social aspects include health and safety, humane work, and training and continuing education.

In addition to this, Wincor Nixdorf subjected the company to a DQS (management systems certification) audit. The successful DQS audit is, in turn, the prerequisite for winning a "+" after the A, the highest rating to be awarded by GRI.

The GRI standard, which was established in1997 in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program as an international standard for sustainability reporting, issued the first guidelines for reports of this kind in 1999. This established an internationally recognized standard for comprehensive and transparent reporting that covers all aspects of a company's sustainability.

Like Wincor Nixdorf, more and more companies have come to grasp the importance of sustainability. For example, 93 percent of CEOs expect sustainable business practices to have a major impact on their core business over the next ten years. This was the result of a survey conducted in 2010 by the UN Global Compact initiative among around 800 CEOs worldwide. They included the heads of many of the world's biggest enterprises in the 25 leading branches of industry, for example the automotive, finance, IT and telecommunications, consumer goods, power and metal industries. Global Compact, the largest international amalgamation of as many as 6,000 companies from 135 countries in the interest of sustainability, now recommends its members to have their sustainability reports GRI-certified.

At Wincor Nixdorf, the first sustainability report it submitted has prepared the ground for a report that will appear on a regular basis in future. You will find the sustainability report on the company's homepage at
