VNG and Gazprom intensify cooperation on gas storage facility safety

Contracts signed at second international conference in Leipzig

Leipzig, (PresseBox) - VNG - Verbundnetz Gas Aktiengesellschaft (VNG), Leipzig, and OAO Gazprom, Moscow, are to intensify their cooperation on the safety of underground storage facilities for natural gas. On the occasion of the "2nd International Conference on assurance of operational safety and reliability of underground gas storage facilities" in Leipzig, the two long-term partners have today signed two contracts on joint research efforts. "The importance of natural gas storage facilities in Europe has been growing for many years. In future, storage facilities will continue to play a key role both in ensuring security of supplies and in allowing players on major spot and futures markets to benefit from volume and price fluctuations," said Prof. e.h. Dr.-Ing. Klaus-Ewald Holst, Chairman of the Executive Board of VNG.

In future, VNG and Gazprom subsidiary OOO Gazprom VNIIGAZ are to work on a future-oriented, energy-saving ejector system at Bernburg underground storage facility. The new system will reduce the compressor power required for natural gas injection and therefore also energy consumption. Agreement on joint research work was also agreed with OOO Gazpromenergodiagnostika. The two companies are to develop procedures for even more reliable measurements in underground storage facilities and are to concentrate on improved condition assessment for well installations. VNG and the Gazprom subsidiary have already cooperated in this area for several years. VNG and OAO Gazprom have been engaged in joint research work for the development of energy-saving gas storage and gas transmission systems for more than ten years.

This year, the international conference will bring gas storage experts to Leipzig on May 25 and 26. The conference was first held in 2009 on the initiative of VNG and Gazprom. The objective of the conference is to provide a platform for the exchange of information between international specialists and storage facility operators on the latest equipment and methods for ensuring optimum operation, the reliability of above-ground and underground installations and the possibilities of optimizing natural gas injection into and withdrawal from different storage formations.
