SGS Performs Soil Testing for the Significant Irrigation Project in Australia

(PresseBox) (Geneva, ) In April 2010, SGS was awarded a contract to provide Soil Testing for the irrigation expansion project in Australia, a program aimed at providing economic and social development in Western Australia by extending the irrigated area. During the contract, which is expected to be completed by the end of October 2010, SGS is offering a wide range of Soil Testing services including sieving analysis and compaction tests.

In April 2010, SGS, the world's leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, was assigned a contract to provide Soil Testing for the irrigation expansion project, which is expected to be finished by the end of October 2010 before the wet season starts.

The irrigation project is a program developed in Western Australia, which will extend the irrigated area by 8,000 hectares. The main aim of the project is to realize the full potential of available natural resources in the region to create a vibrant and major regional centre. This will provide major opportunities for growth and sustainability for the region's economic and social development in conjunction with the improvement of social, community and commonuse infrastructure, including offfarm water supply, drainage and roads. The project will provide opportunities for indigenous people to benefit through employment, business development and improved community facilities.

As the realization of the full potential of the agricultural land in the Western Australia region was of utmost importance, the project required a reliable thirdparty testing company to perform Soil Testing.

Due to its extensive experience and competence in similar projects, SGS Australia was awarded the contract to execute Soil Testing services, including sieving analysis and compaction tests.

Soil Testing provided by SGS determines the density, moisture content and drying effects of soil in the Western Australia region. It is indispensable for assessing the soil fertility and proper application of nutrients in order to maximize the yield in the region. Moreover, Soil Testing offered by SGS is very important for analyzing the physical performance, characteristics and classification of the soil used for building roads and drainage systems to ensure the top quality of the planned infrastructure.

In order to assess the quality of soil in a reliable and adequate way, a team of two highly qualified SGS experts collect soil samples with a soil probe from the surface (0-15 cm) and subsurface (15-60 cm). These soil samples are analyzed by SGS specialists in a portable laboratory which was built specifically for the irrigation project. SGS performs Soil Testing by applying sieving analysis and compaction tests in accordance with Australian Standards including AS1289.

During the sieving analysis, also called a gradiation test, SGS's team of experts assess the particle size distribution and gradiation of soil samples in order to check how the soil performs in use and whether it is appropriate for various engineering purposes such as building of the infrastructure. Furthermore, SGS conducts compaction tests which determine the maximum achievable density of the soil in the region and are of the utmost importance for monitoring the site conditions.
