SGS Performs Materials Testing and Quality Control for the Subway Extension in Madrid, Spain

(PresseBox) (Geneva, ) Madrid, the capital of Spain, has one of the most extensive metro systems anywhere in the world. For the latest construction project, the new subway extension of Line 9, SGS Spain is providing Materials Testing and Quality Control. More than 400 types of Material Tests will be carried out in SGS's laboratory in Madrid.

Madrid, home to over three million people, has one of the most extensive metro systems anywhere in the world. Since its first line opened in 1919, steady expansion has taken place.

The latest project is the new subway extension of Line 9, which connects Madrid with Mirasierra, by three kilometers including two new stations.

Due to its extensive experience in similar projects, SGS Spain was awarded a contract to provide independent inspection and quality control of the materials used for this construction project.

The construction and maintenance of subway lines is a project with a high degree of responsibility. The tiniest discontinuities and defects in the used materials can cause bad accidents when the train line is in operation.

In January 2010, SGS started with its inspection services and quality control encompassing more than 400 types of material tests. As an independent third party, SGS will be testing almost every kind of construction material involved in this subway extension project, including cement, concrete works, bitumen and rails in order to ensure the quality of the construction works.

The Material Tests will be performed onsite as well as carried out in SGS's civil construction laboratory in Madrid.

The Material Tests by SGS Spain are performed in accordance with the Spanish UNE code as well as the regulations of RENFE, the Spanish public railway company. The inspection work by SGS will be completed by the end of October 2011.

SGS's Construction Materials Testing laboratories are the first choice when clients require testing by an independent inspection organization, advice on quality of the materials and information on the requirements for import and export of construction materials.

With more than 1,000 laboratories around the world, Material Tests at SGS are performed in order to verify material characteristics, such as tensile strength, compressive strength, bending strength, aging characters or chemical composition. Services may include Construction Materials Testing, Coating Inspection, Failure Analyses and Prevention, Mechanical Testing, Metal Testing and Polymer Testing.

Industrial Services is one of the core business lines of the SGS Group, carrying out not only Material Testing services but helping clients from the Construction Industry to reduce risk, prevent construction errors, control budgets and effectively keep the construction project within time deadlines.
