Apartments from the bar and IT resources from the cloud

(PresseBox) (Cologne, ) For those seeking apartments in Bochum, the main railway station is the first port of call: right opposite it in the "Wohnbar", the city's largest property company, VBW BAUEN UND WOHNEN, is advising interested parties about apartments for rent from its portfolio of 13,000 properties within the city zone. The most important tool for the VBW advisors when doing so is the SAP rental portal from the industry specialist, Immologis. At the touch of a button, it generates adverts which are suitable for the customer. Pironet NDH Datacenter is responsible for the SAP operation. The ICT service provider provides storage space and computer processing power for the SAP environment by cloud computing - even to the "Wohnbar".

Furthermore, the rental portal is able to adjust adverts for apartments to the commonly used property sites on the internet in a way that is fully automated. The deployment of the industry solution at VBW accompanied the migration to the current version SAP ERP and the change of the operational services provider to the ERP environment. Since November 2010 the specialist for medium-sized businesses, Pironet NDH, has been taking care of the operation of the core modules and the entire SAP database. Dietmar Kübler, IT Manager at VBW, cites the crucial factors for the change as being IT security, availability and the possibility of using IT resources for the operation of SAP on demand.

Storage space and computing power from the cloud

VBW relies on cloud computing to provide its SAP with storage space and computing power. The ERP environment in the Pironet NDH data centres obtains the necessary resources as "infrastructure as a service" from the business cloud of the ICT service provider. "In comparison to operating it ourselves, we no longer need to build up server performance over the long term and we avoid costly capacity excesses and shortages. Instead, we are able to dynamically absorb periodic peaks in demand," says Kübler.

IT security and availability as a driver of outsourcing

The outsourcing drivers at VBW also include the protection of IT systems: "With us, above-average importance is attached to data protection and IT security," says Kübler. "For this reason we decided to outsource our SAP system as well as our databases to a high-security infrastructure. With Pironet NDH, we have found a service provider that has appropriately certified data centre capacity within Germany. Furthermore, we benefit from the increased overall availability of our business-critical applications than we could otherwise achieve with our own resources."

Division of work in the service provider team

Siegfried Döring, Managing Director at SAP consultancy firm Immologis, views the cooperation of integration and operating specialists as a requirement for the success of comparable outsourcing projects: "Such an ERP landscape cannot be represented using the standard services in outsourcing that are typical of those offered by the public cloud. Instead, we have put together a service package with Pironet NDH that is tailored to the client. This includes obtaining IT resources from the cloud, as well as availability commitments (SLAs) that cover peaks in demand that are typical for the sector through monthly processing runs."
