Five rules for energy-conscious use of halogen light
- Replace your old light bulbs
Many people have become very fond of the good old light bulb. And for good reason. For over 100 years they have been providing us with reliable warm and attractive light. Unfortunately incandescent light bulbs really belong in the era of coil operated phone booths and telegraphy - and they are certainly not ideal either for your wallet or the climate. For people who for nostalgic reasons or because of their warm light would rather not be separated from them, OSRAM has come up with the perfect solution in Halogen Energy Savers. These halogen energy-saving lamps produce brilliant light typical of halogen lamps but can be dimmed without restriction. They last twice as long as incandescent lamps and achieve energy savings up to 30%. Besides Halogen Energy Savers are available in different shapes and with different bases to suit virtually any light fitting in your home (e.g. lights in the kitchen, lights in the living room, bathroom lights, reading lights and table lights).
- Check the wattage
What many people don’t know: The wattage shown on the package indicates how much electricity the lamp will consume. Lamps with a high wattage consume more kilowatt hours of electricity than lamps with a low wattage. Here too the solution is simple. If you want to replace a 40 W incandescent lamp you would only need a 28 W Halogen Energy Saver to achieve the same amount of light.
- Check the Energy
Label When you are next in a supermarket and faced with a choice of products you can tell how economical they are by looking at the Energy Label. For most lamps this information is shown on the back of the packaging. Ordinary light bulbs have Energy Label D+E, which is significantly worse than Halogen Energy Savers, which have Energy Label C+D.
- Be flexible
Lamps that are used in the home should be as flexible as possible. The luminous intensity in a room depends not only on the time of day but also on the time of year. To achieve the right amount of light whatever the situation, it is best to use luminaires and lamps with dimmer circuits. You can then choose either bright lighting to suit your mood. This will also have an effect on energy consumption. As the amount of light emitted is reduced the lamp wattage and therefore the power consumption are also reduced.
- Check the material
If lamps are not producing the required luminous intensity it is worth taking a look underneath the cover. If the cover is dirty or if the light bulb has blackened there will be much less light than otherwise would be possible. The easiest way to combat a blackened light bulb is to remove it and replace it with a Halogen Energy Saver. The halogens inside the lamp ensure that the bulb of the halogen lamp does not blacken, so the lamp retains its brilliance throughout its life.
