Environmental protection at products and production has always been major considerations at OSRAM. Thanks to the latest technologies OSRAM expands its range with energy-saving halogen lamps, the Halogen Energy Savers. It is not just by using these lamps with their energy-saving potential of up to 30% that a contribution can be made to climate protection. To produce these lamps OSRAM makes use of an innovative process that requires only eco-friendly materials. And the fact that Halogen Energy Savers can be thrown out with normal domestic waste at the end of their lives means that this new series of halogen products is part of an environmentally friendly cycle.

The birth of the Halogen Energy Savers – their production

The most innovative part of the Halogen Energy Savers, the halogen burner, is manufactured in Germany, in the modern halogen factory Eichstätt. In addition to the ambitious technology, OSRAM places great importance on environmental protection. Only eco-friendly prematerials of the products are used in the manufacture of Halogen Energy Savers. The solder for all lamps with E27/14 bases has been replaced by high-quality lead-free solder, for example.

What is in the Halogen Energy Savers – their technologies

The Halogen Energy Saver series includes high voltage lamps and low voltage lamps. They achieve energy savings of up to 30%. This is made possible by two different technical principles.

In the case of low voltage lamps, IRC technology is used. Special bulb geometry and a sophisticated coating on the bulb ensure that the thermal (infrared) radiation is reflected and the heat emitted from the filament is reflected back to the filament. This means that the filament is heated further. As a result, less electrical energy has to be supplied to it. This technology is used for all low-voltage Energy saver lamps (12 V) because of the optimum geometric conditions. High voltage halogen lamps on the other hand are produced with innovative xenon technology. This leads to a reduction in thermal losses from the filler gas. As the size of the gas atoms increases, the thermal conductivity of the filler gas decreases. By using the appropriate lamp filler gas, the heat loss of the tungsten filament from the gas can be reduced so less electrical energy is needed to heat the filament. In addition, the use of a filler gas with atoms as heavy as possible slows down the vaporization of the tungsten atoms from the filament. This process extends the life of the lamp.

UV filter technology for a healthy life

High voltage lamps and low-voltage lamps are equipped with another OSRAM invention, the UV filter technology. This ensures that as much of the UV radiation as possible is absorbed. OSRAM is the first lighting manufacturer in the world to adopt this technology and uses special quartz produced in Berlin and enriched with UV-absorbent substances in the production of the bulbs. This quartz prevents unwanted UV components from being emitted in the light. OSRAM halogen lamps therefore easily comply with the threshold values for the emission of UV radiation from halogen lamps defined in the international IEC lamp standard.
