New Jersey Institute of Technology 2nd Annual Biotech/Life Sciences Industry Forum

(PresseBox) (Newark, NJ, ) New Jersey Institute of Technology's Dept of Biomedical Engineering in collaboration with Career Development Services, will host its 2nd Annual Biotech/Life Sciences Industry Forum on March 7 2012, it was announced today.

The dual theme of the event is "Translational Research - From The Lab to the MarketPlace, & Building Your Talent Pipeline." With nearly 500 enrolled students, 40% of whom are women, the Biomedical Engineering program at NJIT has become one of the largest in the College of Engineering.

Substantial funding from federal, state, and private sources supports NJIT'S goal of achieving nationally recognized excellence in neural and neuromuscular engineering. The forum will feature a faculty panel discussion on the state of translational research and presentations from top graduate students who are conducting collaborative research with three leading NJIT biomedical engineering professors who, over the past five years, received the National Science Foundation coveted Early Career Award.

PhD Candidate Gloria Portocarrero is a Gates Millennium Scholar, McNair Scholar, a member of the Albert Dorman Honors College and the Educational Opportunity Program. Under the direction of Dr.Treena L Arinzeh, Gloria has studied how adult stem cells are used to develop cartilage. She will talk about "The Evaluation of a Glycosaminoglycan-Mimetic for Cartilage Tissue Engineering."

BS and MS Candidate Bemin Ghobreal is a McNair Scholar double majoring in biomedical and electrical engineering. Under Dr. Tara L Alvarez's guidance, Bemin researches neuroscience and vision. The title of his talk is "How Traumatic Brain Injuries Impair Vision."

PhD Candidates Mevan Siriwardane and Joseph Loverde under the direction of Dr. Bryan J Pfister have conducted research on mechanisms of neural injuries. Joseph recently published an article "Axon Stretch Growth: The Mechanotransduction of Neuronal Growth" Mevan will talk about "An In vitro Model for Evaluating Collagen-Based Constituents for Engineering Nerve Conduits." The title of Joseph's talk is "Axon Stretch Growth: The Biomechanical Regulation of Nerve Growth."
