Shunt-based management system for lithium-ion batteries

Isabellenhütte presents joint project with I+ME Actia at PCIM

(PresseBox) (Dillenburg, Germany, ) Isabellenhütte is a leader in the development of precise shunt-based measurement technologies. The new "IB4" battery management system is designed for four-cell lithium ion batteries with individual cell voltages of up to 5V, and was developed in cooperation with the company's Braunschweig-based development partner I+ME Actia. It features 300 A current measurement, 1,000 A pulse and highly precise resolution of 10 mA, as well as a low measurement error range of just 0.4 percent of the measured value. The unit's power consumption is very low, 2.5 mA when the master switch is on and 1.5 mA when it is switched off.

Numerous interfaces for communication, measurement value recording, and control allow the IB4 to be deployed flexibly. For example, two push switch inputs provide the opportunity to query the state of charge at the touch of a button. There are various analogue inputs, including those for the measurement of cell temperature, battery mode planning, total voltage, and hardware monitoring of cell voltages. There are also control outputs for a bistable relay, five LED charge indicator displayed, as well as two optional low-side switching outputs for special applications, e.g. heat monitoring. The IB4 from Isabellenhütte has an isolation voltage of 200 V. The current sensor is an 100-µOhm shunt.

Consistent development since 2002

In 2002, Isabellenhütte Heusler was the first company in the world to realise high-precision measurement of current, voltage, and temperature for automobile battery management. The battery management developments made at that time were the beginning of numerous measurement modules for automobiles and electromobility, as well as industrial and regenerative energy applications. Today, battery management is essential for measuring the state of charge in vehicles, particularly hybrid and electric vehicles.

Isabellenhütte Heusler GmbH & Co. KG has been owned by the Heusler family since 1827. Today, the company is an international leader in the production of low-resistance precision and power resistors. Other business units are dedicated to the production of thermoelectric and resistance alloys, while the measurement technology designed by Isabellenhütte is considered to lead the field in shunt-based current measuring systems. The company combines its precision measuring systems under the new brand name ISAscale®. Around 720 staff are employed at its headquarters and production works in Dillenburg, Hesse.
