Creation of Europe's largest trade union federation for industry and manufacturing workers is well on track!

Brussels, (PresseBox) - National trade union leaders of the three European trade union federations EMF, EMCEF and ETUF:TCL have unequivocally signalled their readiness to join forces at their upcoming merger. Representing 8 million workers, this future new trade union federation is certain to make its voice heard and its actions felt in Europe!

The recovery of Europe's economy, as well as high-quality jobs for industry workers today and in the future, rests essentially on a strong and sustainable industry. The new trade union federation for industry workers will therefore commit to fighting for a dynamic economic framework that allows industry to thrive as a motor for jobs and sustainable growth. At the same time it is underlined that industry must live up to its responsibilities vis-à-vis all those it employs.

At their first joint meeting on 31st January 2012, the three trade union federations strongly condemned the austerity measures put in place by European governments as well as the attacks on acquired workers' and social rights. They demand that fundamental social and workers' rights be strengthened. Social progress and the European social model cannot be sacrificed at the altar of ultra-liberal dogma. Instead, European industry needs a new project based on investment, employment growth and worker participation.

Today, the first joint meeting of the Executive bodies of the three founding organisations unanimously agreed on a political programme, new statutes and the candidates for the political leadership of the new organisation. It can be seen as a successful dry run for the founding Congress that will take place on 16th May 2012.

EMF: European Metalworkers' Federation - EMCEF: European Mine, Chemical and Energy Workers' Federation - ETUF-TCL: European Trade Union Federation: Textiles, Clothing, Leather
