Most high-performance computing experts agree that exascale systems will be a reality by 2020, but there is far less agreement and much more discussion on the route to achieving that goal. At the 2012 International Supercomputing Conference, experts from around the world will give their perspectives on where things stand now in regard to exascale and where the HPC community is heading. ISC'12 will be held June 17-21 in Hamburg.

ISC'12, the 27th conference in the series, is expected to draw 2,400 attendees from academia, research institutions and industry around the world. An estimated 160 leading organizations will showcase their products and research in the ISC exhibition.

A number of technical program sessions will focus on exascale computing, including:

- Gerhard Wellein of the Erlangen Regional Computing Center will chair a session on "Application Performance: Lessons Learned from Petascale Computing" on Monday, June 18. Speakers include Georg Hager, Erlangen Regional Computing Center; John Shalf, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; Jack Dongarra, University of Tennessee; and Motoi Okuda, Fujitsu.
- Horst Simon of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will host an "Exascale Chat" on Tuesday, June 19. Participants will include Mark Seager, Intel, USA; Yutong Lu, National University of Defence Technology, China; and Mateo Valero, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Spain.
- Thomas Sterling of Indiana University will chair a session on "Exascale Computing: Where Are We?" on Wednesday, June 20. In addition to Sterling, speakers are: William Harrod, U.S. Dept. of Energy; Philippe Ricoux of TOTAL Group; Yutaka Ishikawa, University of Tokyo and RIKEN AICS; and Michael Resch, High Performance Computing Center, Stuttgart.
- Estela Suarez of the Jülich Supercomputing Center will chair a special session on "The European Way to Exascale - Presentation of the EU Funded Exascale Projects" on Wednesday, June 20. Speakers will describe projects at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Heidelberg and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya/ Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
