Ericsson and Intel Security showcase innovative approach to 4G security

(PresseBox) (Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain, ) Ericsson and Intel® Security are together demonstrating an innovative approach to mobile network security combining Ericsson’s expertise in telecommunications networks and Intel Security’s leadership in consumer and enterprise security. The solution targets mobile operators’ need for improved security situation awareness of the growing volume of illicit traffic in mobile networks in order to be able to adequately protect their network resources, their reputation, and their customers.

Recent trends indicate that mobile malware is becoming more prevalent and that the increasing number of devices connected to mobile networks can be targeted and used to attack the Internet and even the mobile network infrastructure itself. On-network attacks are difficult to address from outside the mobile network, leaving operators on their own to shoulder the increased operational costs and decreased customer satisfaction associated with compromised and malicious subscriber devices.

Through uniquely combining mobile network and end-user security information with analytics capabilities, the solution could provide the operator with a new level of situational awareness and actionable insights. By fully utilizing information that is collected from traffic at various points in the network, operators can be better equipped defend against intentional and unintentional illicit control and user traffic. This has the potential to increase network efficiency and performance and enhance the overall network security posture.

The Mobile Network Security solution is based on Ericsson Network Manager and Intel Security’s Next Generation Firewall and Security Event Management products.

Among a range of use-cases, the demonstration includes techniques for detecting and protecting the EPC (Evolved Packet Core) from distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks originating from mobile end points, and managing mobile malware entering the mobile network from the Internet.

A reduction in illicit traffic in the wireless spectrum and fixed line backhaul and core could produce measurable operational gains for operators. Better infrastructure performance could also improve customer experience and reduce help desk calls associated with mobile malware degrading device and network performance. As the Internet of Things (IoT) starts to play a larger role in the value-added services associated with mobile infrastructure, fine-grained security in the EPC offers new forms of differentiation.

No computer system can be absolutely secure.
