Imtech: huge order for technology at Berlin Brandenburg International Airport in Germany

(PresseBox) (Gouda, ) Imtech (technical services provider in Europe) announces that it has received an order worth more than dozens of million euro for part of the technology for the expansion and upgrading of the existing Berlin-Schönefeld Airport into Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg International) in Germany. Imtech (Imtech Deutschland) will act as lead-manager of a consortium together with the facility specialist caverion group. The new airport will be an ultramodern airport with an initial capacity of 22 to 25 million passengers per year, and will be opened in 2011.

'The order confirms our strong market position in Germany,' stated René van der Bruggen, CEO of Imtech. 'The specific technical knowledge and expertise that we have accumulated at airports make Imtech an attractive partner, able to offer numerous sustainable, integrated and intelligent solutions from a single point of contact'.

Low-energy, high-technology Imtech solutions

In time, Berlin Brandenburg International Airport will become the third largest airport in Germany, after Frankfurt and Munich. The maximum capacity in the near future has been set at about 45 million travellers per year. The central passenger terminal, with its own railway station and thousands of parking spaces, has a surface area of 280,000-m² and is 220 metres deep, 180 metres long and 32 metres high. This building is linked to a 720-metre pier giving direct access to dozens of gates for the planes. Imtech will be responsible for all energy systems and the comfortable heating and cooling, including an innovative heat recovery system that re-uses 70% of all the heat generated in the terminal. In total, 2.5 million cubic metres of air per hour will be conditioned. Besides this, a sophisticated fire safety system will be installed with amongst others 50,000 sprinkler heads. Imtech is still engaged in negotiations about other technical solutions in this huge project.

Strong position at German airports

Imtech has a strong position in the German airports market. In recent years, Imtech has successfully implemented the technology in the new terminals of the airports Berlin-Tegel, Dusseldorf and Munich, generating excellent references. In 2008, Imtech won the order for the technology in the new building linking Terminals 1 and 2 at Frankfurt International Airport. This connecting building is intended for the processing of Airbus A380 passengers and was already put into use at the end of 2008. All this specific know-how and experience have contributed to the selection of Imtech as technology partner for Berlin Brandenburg International Airport
