Research project "Energy-Efficient Driving 2014"
Ministry of Education and Research gives the go-ahead for a joint research project by the German motor industry. Target: to cut consumption by up to ten per cent
The project is based on two pivotal approaches aimed at significantly boosting energy efficiency in vehicles. Firstly, cars are to become "intelligent" and, for example, use knowledge of the planned route to develop proactive operating strategies designed to save energy. Data from navigation, radar or camera systems offer the possibility of recognising driving situations with greater power requirements or reserves and, based on this, initiating appropriate responses in good time on the part of the car or driver. Secondly, the vehicle power supply and associated components are to be specifically tailored to the possibilities of these intelligent operating strategies. The architecture of the onboard power supply, for example, is being completely rethought with optimal brake energy regeneration in mind.

The results of the project, moreover, are important for future generations of electric vehicles whose energy management systems can derive significant benefit from proactive operating strategies."
With its targeted cutback in fuel consumption of up to ten per cent, the project will be able to contribute significantly to the European goal of achieving a 20 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by the year 2020.
The companies involved in the EFA 2014 project are Audi AG, Audi Electronic Venture GmbH, BMW AG, Continental Safety Engineering International GmbH, ELMOS Semiconductor AG, Flextronics Automotive GmbH & Co. KG, FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik, Harman Automotive Division (Harman Becker Automotive Systems GmbH), Infineon Technologies AG, metaio GmbH and Robert Bosch GmbH. The project is coordinated by the BMW Group.
