HMS integrating POWERLINK into Anybus® modules

(PresseBox) (Winterthur, ) Since its founding in 1988, HMS Industrial Networks AB has been at the fore-front of communication technology development, especially in machine manu-facturing. With Anybus®, the Swedish company introduced a network card onto the market that can connect practically any device with any network. It has since grown to become an impressive palette of modules that can either be inserted or fully integrated into automation devices.

With Anybus® technology, HMS customers can quickly and easily implement multi-protocol interfaces for fieldbus and Industrial Ethernet solutions that are feasible even when manufacturing small quantities. This results in extremely short development times that reduce overall time to market considerably.

900 additional POWERLINK devices

Over 900 different product types from a wide variety of device manufacturers are equipped with Anybus®. In industrial automation applications, especially those involving high-performance machines, HMS sees growing demand for a network technology that combines a high degree of reliability with high-speed data transfer. Because of this - and as a result of B&R's unyielding commitment to promoting this technology - HMS is now integrating POWERLINK into its Anybus® modules.

The first POWERLINK-compatible product, the Anybus® CompactCom, will be unveiled at this year's SPS/IPC/DRIVES exhibition in Nuremberg. Mass produc-tion is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2012.

"Anybus® integration opens up an additional 900 first-rate automation hardware products that can now be easily included in POWERLINK-based systems," says Stefan Schönegger, manager of the Open Automation Technologies Business Unit at B&R and chairman of the Ethernet POWERLINK Standardization Group (EPSG).

Ethernet Powerlink Standardization Group

The Ethernet Powerlink Standardization Group (EPSG) is an independent organization founded in 2003 by leading companies from the drive and automation industry. Its aims are the standardization and further development of POWERLINK, which was first introduced by B&R in 2001. The high-performance real-time communication system is a protocol extension of the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard, designed to ensure real-time data transfer on the microsecond level. EPSG cooperates with leading standardization organizations, such as CAN in Automation (CiA) and the IEC. Anton Meindl, BU Manager Controls at B&R, is the EPSG's CEO.
