Mail deliverymen receive training in dealing with dogs
- Deutsche Post and Unfallkasse Post und Telekom expand training program
- Police dog trainers advise on conflict prevention
Dogs and mail delivery staff – a thorny topic and one never far from the headlines as each year brings new incidents. Last year alone around 600 Deutsche Post delivery staff had to spend some time off work after being bitten by dogs. For this reason Deutsche Post is now expanding the range of preventive training offered to staff by teaming up with the German Post and Telecommunications Accident Insurance Fund (UK PT), the body which provides occupational accident insurance for Deutsche Post employees. A training program has been developed by UK PT consisting of standardized theory and practice sections and in it delivery staff will be given instruction on how to respond when faced with aggressive dogs and how to prevent such situations arising. The program is called “Nothing against dogs, but... – training for delivery staff in how to deal with dogs" and during the training sessions the trainers, who are themselves experienced dog handlers working for the German police authorities, will pass on practical tips and advice on how to deal with aggressive dogs. In this way Deutsche Post is expanding the range of training it offers in this area and once again reaffirming its sense of responsibility in trying to protect its employees. For some time the company has been supporting its delivery staff with specific advice on how to respond in conflict situations involving dogs. As well as regional training courses Deutsche Post will be providing additional reference material including brochures, flyers, registration cards and standard letters for dog owners. These measures have already brought major improvements.
According to information supplied by UK PT, the number of dog bite injuries has been on the decline for a number of years now. Even so, health experts as well as those responsible at Deutsche Post and UK PT see this new dedicated training program for delivery staff as another way of bringing down accident rates still further.
