Brocade powers the largest Internet Exchange Point in Italy

Brocade BigIron switches help the Milan Internet Exchange to manage surging Internet traffic volumes, reaching peaks of 54 Gbps

(PresseBox) (Milan, Italy, ) Brocade® (Nasdaq: BRCD) today announced that the Milan Internet Exchange (MIX), the largest Internet Exchange Point in Italy, has adopted Brocade switches to address demand for higher connectivity speeds. MIX installed Brocade BigIron® RX switches to meet these requirements. In addition to have marketleading performance, with wirespeed capabilities and ultra low latency, Brocade's Ethernet switches and routers consume much less power and require less cooling than competing solutions, all of which were critical to MIX in making its decision.

Serving more than 80 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and 26 Carriers across Italy, the Milan Internet Exchange (MIX) is the main exchange Internet Hub in Italy and it is among the top ten IXPs in Europe and was formed with the aim of improving the capacity throughput to the Internet, facilitating the interconnection between the different Internet Service Providers operating in Italy.

"When we started in 2000, the traffic we handled was in the order of 300 Mbps. Ten years later [in November 2009] our traffic patterns have grown by more than 160 times to exceed 54 Gbps, and it is set to increase further in the near future", said Valeria Rossi, General Manager at MIX. "After all, the phenomenon is visible to all: Internet traffic is reaching unprecedented peaks due to applications such as video, mobile devices via Web, advanced applications, online services, and even new paradigms such as cloud computing. For this reason, the bandwidth and the port made available are essential to be able to always offer the best services to our customers."

"To satisfy all of our networking needs we use Brocade products, utilized also to power our internal switching functions. Performance, reliability, scalability and flexibility are the main advantages of Brocade products, as well as allowing complete redundancy configurations through port density, which translates into an ability to cope with the most compelling traffic surges", points out Ms. Rossi.

The selection of Brocade solutions was made on the basis of thorough analysis of available technologies, and also upon a survey on the experiences of similar IXPs across Europe, particularly the Amsterdam Internet Exchange Point (AMS-IX), the most important in the world with peak traffic in the order of 850 gigabits per second.

"We have frequent exchanges with the center in Amsterdam, and its positive experience with Brocade has further convinced us of the validity of our choice. Looking at the near future, we intend to strengthen our technologies at 10 GbE, and the solid scalability of Brocade platforms allows us to make this transition quickly," remarks Ms. Rossi.

"Brocade is committed to best support the growth of the Internet Exchange Points: it is not a coincidence that our networking solutions are present in the top five IXPs worldwide, including MIX and AMS-IX", comments Tino Prato, Country Manager at Brocade Italy. "Thanks to their current capabilities and recent enhancements, our routers and switches are the best solutions to enable IXPs to meet the sophisticated needs of bandwidth, SLA, scalability and efficiency. Our networking solutions provide unsurpassed capacity of aggregation of connections, stability and flexibility, and set new industry standards".
