Work is now in full swing at Medical Valley Hechingen Akademie e. V., the academy founded by members of the "Medical Valley Hechingen" competence network on 1 December 2009. It aims to make the latest information from the medical technology enterprises involved in the competence network accessible to users, companies and research institutes.

The first in a series of seminars is due to be held in February. As part of these events, speakers from a diverse range of areas within the field of medical technology will share their expertise. In addition, the academy is working with BioRegio STERN Management GmbH to provide nonbureaucratic support to new business founders.

The area around Hechingen offers a level of expertise in innovative medical technology that is virtually unparalleled in Germany. The "Medical Valley Hechingen" was launched by Mayor Jürgen Weber in 2002 as a joint initiative for medical technology companies in the Hechingen region. Over 2,500 of the 6,500 employees work in hightech laboratories or similarly highly skilled workplaces. The area is home to global players such as dialysis product manufacturer Gambro which, in 1973, was one of the first medical technology companies to establish a base here and to more than 30 small- and mediumsized companies specialising in medical technology.

In order to further intensify the expertise clustered in the Medical Valley, Medical Valley Hechingen Akademie e.V. was founded on 1 December 2009, also on the suggestion of Mayor Weber. "Within the framework of the ³Medical Valley Hechingen² competence network, events such as lectures, presentations and talks will be held in the various companies involved in the network", explains Hans Marquart, first chairman of the Medical Valley Hechingen Academy and business developer of Hechingen Town Council. "Medical Valley events are where managing directors come together, and we would like to keep it that way. However, there was such an increase in the number of inquiries from other companies, suppliers, service providers and institutes of higher education that we decided to form a separate academy to cater to their needs. This makes it possible to expand the range and number of participants."

The academy's most important partner is BioRegio STERN Management GmbH.

Working in conjunction with Managing Director Dr. Klaus Eichenberg and Project Manager Dr. Kathrin Ballesteros Kateman, Hans Marquart has succeeded in getting the academy off the ground. He also has the support of an advisory council made up of five managing directors from specialist companies, who secure topname speakers for seminars and lectures, and supervise the financing and management of the events.

Four seminar events are scheduled for 2010. Three of these will be held in the newly restored Villa Eugenia, which now houses the academy. In addition to providing training and development opportunities for seminar participants, the academy also aims to promote interaction with other industries and to offer certified advanced training in the future. "The seminars will also enable those within the industry to talk with their peers on an informal basis, thus creating a forum that will act as a valuable source of information and contacts," explains Hans Marquart.

At the first seminar in February, Dr. Ulrike Brucklacher and Dr. Christian Lindemann will speak about the basic principles of statutory health insurance, the selection of criteria for DRG status (Diagnosis Related Groups) and the advertising of medical products. Other seminars held in the Villa Eugenia will focus on specifications for materials used in medical technology and on lean production. The seminar on the operation and structure of an OR will take place in the experimental OR at Tübingenbased wwHc and is aimed at employees of companies working in the operating room environment.

In cooperation with the Medical Valley Hechingen Academy, BioRegio STERN Management GmbH has invited auditors Ernst & Young to present their medical technology report in the academy's new premises on 28 April. This event is being supported by the Society for the Promotion of Biotechnology Stuttgart/Tübingen/Neckar-Alb and the Centre of Competence Minimally Invasive Medicine + Technology Tübingen Tuttlingen. The report gives a fascinating insight into trends within the industry. "We are extremely interested to learn more about the medtech report, but we also know that the medical technology industry here is going from strength to strength," states Marquart with confidence.
