Cognis at ACS 2010: painting the future green with high-performing coating additives

(PresseBox) (Monheim, ) At this year's American Coatings Show (ACS), global specialty chemicals supplier Cognis introduced its latest solutions for the coatings market. Among the products presented were new green defoamers, highly efficient rheology modifiers, green dispersing agents, a coalescent based on renewable raw materials, and a series of highperforming polymerization surfactants. These solutions are in line with Cognis' Greenovating strategy to support consumer demand for highperforming and sustainable products.

Cognis highlighted its comprehensive portfolio of additives and polymerization surfactants for green coatings at ACS 2010:

New green defoamers

Cognis presented FoamStar EF 20 and FoamStar EF 22, two innovative hydrocarbon carrier fluid based defoamers that combine the efficiency of hyperbranched defoaming polymer technology with a very low-VOC matrix. These stateoftheart defoamers can reduce the amount of defoamer needed in paints by up to 50 percent, while delivering very fast bubble break capability. This is especially critical for new low VOC paints that have short open times. These new defoamers have a VOC content of about 0.3 percent (according to US EPA method), compared to the 4 percent VOC content found in a typical mineral oil defoamer. The total VOC contribution in paint can be dramatically reduced by a combination of low use levels and very low VOCs of the new FoamStar EF series defoamers.

Another new product in Cognis' defoamer range is Dehydran SE 2. This emulsion defoamer combines organosilicone actives with hyperbranched polymer technology to deliver a waterbased defoamer that makes high efficiency, high compatibility and excellent long term persistence possible. Dehydran SE 2 can be added in the grind as well as in the letdown step. The product is free from odor, VOCs, alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs) or heavy metals, and is particularly suitable to replace organosilicone defoamer solutions which contain up to 4 percent VOCs (according to US EPA method). Dehydran SE 2 is universally applicable and covers a wide range of paints from high PVC to low PVC. Dehydran SE 2 does not contribute to any haze or fogging on interior surfaces.

Cognis also displayed FoamStar A 46, a new highperformance defoamer for zero-VOC paints. It is an easiertoincorporate version of the successful FoamStar A 45 with improved flow and leveling performance. FoamStar A 46 combines hyperbranched polymer defoamer technology and superior organosilicone polymers in a more readily dispersible package. It is an excellent defoamer to use in systems that are hard to defoam and where microfoam trapping is a problem. It contains low VOC of about 2 percent (according to US EPA method), and is free from odor, APEOs and heavy metals.

Highly efficient associative thickeners

Another new product introduced was DSX 3291. It provides an excellent pseudoplastic viscosity profile and is up to five times more efficient than conventional associative thickeners. It is easy to handle and can be incorporated into coating formulations with low shear mixing. The product also provides superior sag and chemical resistance; excellent antisettling property, low viscosity drop on tinting, and enables thick coatings to be easily sprayed. Based on polyurethane chemistry, it is free from odors, VOCs, APEOs and heavy metals (such as organic tin compounds).

Cognis also presented DSX 3121, a highly efficient associative thickener that provides an excellent Newtonian viscosity profile and is up to 50 percent more efficient than conventional associative thickeners. In various tests, a combination of DSX 3121 with DSX 3291 has been shown to work very well in new latexes designed for zero-VOC paints where it delivers essentially syneresisfree paints with excellent balanced rheology with very low rheology modifier usage. Based on hyperbranched polyether chemistry, DSX 3121 is free from odors, VOCs, APEOs and heavy metals.

Green dispersing and wetting agents for aqueous coatings

Also highlighted was Hydropalat 216, a wettingdispersing aid designed to replace benzyl blocked APEObased wetting agents in the grind step for base paints and for factoryfinished paints. Hydropalat 216 also offers a single dispersing solution for organic and inorganic pigments with improved gloss and compatibility. It can also be used to replace polymeric dispersing agents in industrial paints. Hydropalat 216 has VOC of less than 2 percent (according to US EPA method), is APEOfree, and can be used in a wide range of applications.

Coalescent based on renewable raw materials

Based on renewable raw materials, the Loxanol EFC 200 coalescent is designed to work in a variety of latexes to replace coalescents that contain up to 100 percent VOC (according to US EPA method). It is free from odor, APEOs and heavy metals, and has a VOC content of approximately 2 percent.

Polymerization surfactants

Cognis also presented a new generation of renewable nonionic surfactants at the ACS. The Disponil NG series of polymerization surfactants are designed to improve the performance of latexes in zero to low-VOC coatings, while offering an opportunity to reduce energy costs. This new class of surfactants offers gelfree dilution for faster manufacturing, reduced foam, faster foam decay and lower pour points. It reduces the need to be stored in heated conditions, resulting in lower manufacturing costs and a reduced carbon footprint for latexes.

Our additives and polymerization surfactants offer solutions to our customers meeting the global trend towards highperforming green products, for example by reducing overall VOC content of paints. This helps give manufacturers the competitive edge they need to succeed."
