VITRONIC at Hannover Messe 2015 – the world’s biggest industrial fair

VITRONIC presents VINSPEC, the optical inspection system for the production of carbon and glass fiber reinforced plastics.

(PresseBox) (Wiesbaden, )
Wiesbaden, April 01, 2015 – At Hannover Messe 2015 from April 13 to 17 VITRONIC will present a new system for automated optical 2D/3D position detection and quality inspection for CFRP and GFRP cuts and components used in production processes. Examples of components from the automotive industry will be shown where optical VITRONIC inspection systems are already being successfully used.

At Hannover Messe 2015 VITRONIC will demonstrate the ultimate performance of our automated inspection system VINSPEC for CFRP/GFRP composite materials using components from the automotive industry (see photo).

VITRONIC’s sophisticated machine vision system automatically checks the correctness CFRP/GFRP of selected components, as well as their distances and positions. At the same time, the quality and geometry of the components are inspected prior to further processing. Inline inspection is designed for seamless integration into automated manufacturing processes. This ensures a smooth and efficient operational flow and, at the same time, allows automated quality inspection of the components.

“The precise and reliable quality inspection of CFRP/GFRP cuts and hardened components is the key factor for a continuous, automated process chain in large-scale industrial production. The seamless integration of the inline inspection system accelerates the positioning and transport of correctly produced components. Through the use of optical inspection systems the proportion of good parts can be increased, even up to the point of zero-defect delivery," explains Markus Maurer, Head of Sales Industrial Automation Division.

Automated quality inspection throughout the entire production process
VITRONIC inspection systems cover CFRP/GFRP inspection across the whole production process from reels to the finished hardened component. The inspection system recognizes dimensions, angles, edges, contours, fiber orientation, web faults in parts as well as extraneous material, e.g. due to impurities. Following the impregnation and hardening processes, the quality of CFRP/GFRP components machined into frames, car body parts, profiles, mountings, and girders are inspected with the VITRONIC system to check for correct dimensions or issues such as folds, fiber lint, holes, and depressions across wide surfaces and other typical production deficiencies (see the graphic). The contour inspection also detects possible fiber projections. Thus, even minor defects and structural variations from the norm are reliably detected. This automated, objective inspection guarantees consistently high product quality.

VITRONIC consultancy guarantees efficient Implementation
To facilitate easier integration and application of optical inspection systems for companies, VITRONIC offers intensive customized consultancy and support. For example, in the preparation of the project we show you in advance what is important for automated CFRP/GFRP inspection, what the requirements of the production process are, and how production can be optimized with this knowledge. Our customers will benefit from VITRONIC consultancy and implementation coming from a single source.

More quality, less cost: Good reasons to use optical inspection systems
Composite fiber technologies are innovation drivers among lightweight components in many industries. Whilst ultra-lightweight fiber-reinforced composites are roughly as mechanically resilient as steel, they are still far more expensive. Quality inspection using machine vision solutions increases the speed of the manufacturing process. A higher processing speed and consistent automation engineering (including optical quality inspection) applied across the manufacturing process virtually compensates for the cost disadvantage of fiber composite materials.

But there are other good reasons for using optical inspection systems: While entire production processes are accelerated, the reliability of the inspections also improves. This is because without using special templates or measuring equipment it is impossible for any person to measure and inspect product quality, shape and dimensions as precisely as the VITRONIC system with its high-resolution cameras and customer-specific software. In addition, the inspection system automatically documents the component quality. The stored images of each inspection process ensure seamless traceability for component quality in the production process. For the production of safety-critical components, it is particularly important that each component is reliable, fully tested and documented.

VITRONIC Dr.-Ing. Stein Bildverarbeitungssysteme GmbH

VITRONIC is an owner-managed group of companies comprising VITRONIC GmbH with its headquarters in Wiesbaden and several international subsidiaries. The group is a world leader in industrial machine vision covering a wide spectrum from standard products with customer-specific upgradeable modules to individually customized solutions in its core sectors of industry, logistics and traffic technology.

Since VITRONIC was founded in 1984 it has grown on the strength of its own resources. Today we are represented by 700 employees on four continents. In 2014, the VITRONIC group generated total revenue of 120 million euros.

VITRONIC products are state-of-the-art and guaranteed to offer our customers maximum benefits. The group invests over 10 percent of total revenue each year in research and development. All VITRONIC solutions are designed and developed by ourselves and produced in Germany.

Industry and logistics
VITRONIC machine vision systems are used in a wide range of industrial applications to carry out precise or complex inspection tasks. Our automated solutions ensure the highest quality standards of welded and brazed seams and are used, for example, in the automotive and aerospace industries. We also offer flexible surface quality inspection for metal workpieces and endless material.

We support the pharmaceutical industry with seamless print, surface and geometry inspection systems, quality inspection and track-and-trace inspection solutions – which can also be validated thanks to our GAMP certification. For manufacturers of solar cells and modules, we are one of the largest independent partners for optical inspection systems, with over 1,000 installations worldwide.

Our customers in the area of material flow, parcel logistics and mail order seek to optimize their logistics processes. VIPAC systems from VITRONIC can be integrated at any point along the process chain for the automatic capture of product data, package data and customer-specific data. VIPAC reads addresses, barcodes, 2D codes, customer-specific codes and plain text (OCR) with maximum read rates, and measures and weighs packages online. This information is sent directly to the connected ERP systems or CRM solution.

VIPAC systems are used by global logistics companies in the courier, express and parcel sector and in mail order, warehousing and distribution, and manufacturing industry.

Traffic technology
VITRONIC's core competency in the traffic technology sector is the monitoring of vehicles in moving traffic. With our PoliScan family of products, we offer national agencies and private service providers systems for speed enforcement, red light enforcement and license plate reading. Toll system operators use our TollChecker system to automate toll collection and enforcement.

All VITRONIC traffic monitoring systems are based on laser scanner measurement technology (LIDAR, Light Detection and Ranging). This innovation enables high-precision measurements over several lanes of traffic and eliminates the need to integrate equipment into the road surface. Thanks to the benefits offered by LIDAR technology, more than 5,000 VITRONIC laser scanners are currently used in traffic monitoring across the globe.
