On June 22, Germany’s international broadcaster Deutsche Welle officially launched its new English-speaking news and information program. Brilliant background images for live newscasts are provided by a high resolution video wall from eyevis.
The channel was premiered at the Global Media Forum, the international media congress of Deutsche Welle. In front of over 2.000 guests Germany’s Culture Monika Grütters and DW Director General Peter Limbourg pressed the symbolic button to kick off the new English TV channel. The new channel starts with the ambitious goal to establish itself amongst the main international news channels and to present things from a German perspective. Being the flagship of the programs broadcasted by the Deutsche Welle, DW News was equipped with a new representative studio and look modern design look for its graphics.
Under the direction of the system integrator BFE Studio and Medien Systeme GmbH, eyevis, has assembled 144 seamless high-resolution LED-modules type EYE-LED-2.0-FI with a pixel pitch of only 2.0mm at the heart of the new studio in Berlin. On the 24m² curved video wall, images, graphics, videos and social media content can be visualised to support the news program. The LED video wall is composed of three seamless Full-HD areas with a total resolution of 5760 x 1080 pixels
LED-modules by eyevis are ideal for broadcast environments
The high-resolution LED-modules by eyevis are ideal for broadcast environments due to their high brightness and the simple way they adapt to the lighting conditions in the studio. Thanks to their integrated image processing electronics, the LED-modules can be adjusted to the 3200 Kelvin colour temperature required in the studio with one click without perceptible changes of the brightness.
The globally unique front-side access of the LED-modules makes it easy to service the video wall and its single electronic components. Since no rear-service-area is necessary, LED-modules can be installed only inches from the studio wall.
To integrate the video wall into the innovative studio design of set-designers Billion Points Film/TV and Event Ausstattungs GmbH, BFE and eyevis developed a special base-frame, which was invisibly integrated in the studio set. This gives the viewers in front of the TV screens the impression that the LED-wall floats freely in the studio. In order to perfectly match the studio design the video wall was further installed in a 6 degree concave curved angle. The total load of the 144 LED modules adds up to approximately one ton, which is carried by the base-fram construction in an optimal way.
In the framework of the project, BFE Studio and Medien Systeme GmbH as a general contractor rebuilt and the existing Studio 3 including its control room and surrounding area. In addition to the LED video wall by eyevis, the project included six GVG LDX cameras including new filters, which were specifically designed for the use with LED-walls. The LED-wall is fed by a live graphic system by Orad. Through Orad’s Canvas-Technology, a completely frameless feed of the LED-wall over 3 HD panels is possible.
To control the basic features of the LED-wall, a Crestron media control system including touch-control-panels is used. Moreover, rendering systems by Vizrt allow for the embedding of social media elements into live graphics. They can also be used to create augmented reality graphics in Studio 3. In connection with the actually existing LED-wall in the studio, virtual graphics or live-feeds can be placed freely in the room without blue-screen-backgrounds being necessary. The data required to level spatial perspectives in relation to the camera image is provided by CamBot robot stands from Ross. All installed components also fulfil the requirement of the customer to be ready for an automated control of the studio which is planned for the future.
