deZign stand for an electronic display system with zero energy consumption and it is based on e-paper technology. There is no need for costly paper exchanges to accommodate timetable or route changes. From a central office timetables can easily be adjusted with minimal environmental impact at the push of a button. The e-paper technology does not require any energy to display fixed content.
The timetable can be updated for small changes and short-term amendments. Public transportation companies no longer need to drive around to each stop. As a result, operation maintenance and service costs can be drastically reduced.
The Software Zign Pro, developed by dresden elektronik, controls and manages the electronic display deZign. Foresighted planning as well as short-term information on-site become a walk in the park. This guarantees a minimal use of resources.
Vandalism is an important consideration for public transportation companies. With this in mind, the display system deZign is constructed with a heard-wearing plastic or stainless steel case which makes it suitable for in- and outdoor applications. The flexible e-paper - the core of the system - is characterized by its robustness. Finished with Plexiglas or laminated glass the displays are virtually indestructible.
To ensure the readability at night an integrated front light with proximity sensor is available. deZign features high-resolution (1920 x 1280) content on a 217 x 326 mm screen. With the combination of great display features, very low power consumption and environmentally resistant components deZign sets new standards in the field of digital signage.
At stops in urban areas the display systems are integrated in existing infrastructure. This so-called Urban Station achieves data via serial interface, wireless radio or DAB+. dresden elektronik is currently working on a variant of the product called Green Station for the use in rural areas powered by a solar panel. Data will be transmitted via wireless radio or DAB+.
In a pilot project with the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB) the first displays are in use since December 2013. The trials will continue until December 2015. The results so far show that the electronic displays resist damage from weather and vandalism. The product being tested is the Urban Station.
In Switzerland there are already 18 timetables which get updated at the push of a button. The transportation company PostAuto has the so-called DynPaper stops where deZign is integrated. The displays are solar powered and get their data via DAB+.
In addition to its use as a digital timetable at public transportation stops deZign has a wide range of application possibilities. Whether it is used as an event information sign or for advertisements, the energy-efficient display system offers clear advantages over static media. It could even be used as part of an emergency information system in public places displaying maps, traffic connections or hotel recommendations.
