Highest security standards and maximum mobility, all in one: The new Smart Card with Mobile Data Safe enables users to store important data in encrypted form - by virtue of the integrated crypto chip - while its micro format makes it an ideal storage device for mobile use. Users can carry sensitive information with them and - provided they know the correct PIN code - retrieve it from any mobile computer. What is more, they can even access their data from any PDA or Smartphone and, via data link, read it on their desktops or notebooks - a clear advantage compared to USB token solutions. The certgate Smart Card microSD is currently supported by all Windows and Windows Mobile Devices; certgate plans to quickly expand the portfolio to include Blackberry and Symbian products.
Key Qualifications: Lots of Room, Maximum Security
The maximal storage capacity available for encrypted data equals the size of the flash memory which is currently 512 MB; certgate is planning to launch a 1 GB version in 2009. The encryption tool is also contained in the flash but requires only 16 MB of memory. An autorun.exe function ensures both the driver and the application will self-install upon first use of the card. The SD encryption driver is loaded dynamically, enabling encryption/decryption of a flash memory partition based on hybrid procedure with AES 256/RSA 2048 Bit. The key pair is generated or imported upon first use of the card.
All Geared up for Emergencies
Encrypting the flash memory with Smart Card functions of the crypto chip was a customer suggestion, says certgate's CEO Dr. Paschalis Papagrigoriou - and gives one example of how the Mobile Data Safe can be used: „The microSD Smart Card makes it easier for IT managers to handle disaster recovery plans in accordance with company-specific security regulations: On the one hand, documents must not end up in the wrong hands - on the other, people in charge need to have those data at their fingertips at all times.“ As Papagrigoriou goes on to explain, Symantec's 2008 Disaster Recovery Report, which was presented this last September, impressively proves his point: Of a total of 1,000 companies surveyed, a third had to activate their Disaster Recovery Plans during the past year. „With our Mobile Data Safe, IT people are optimally prepared for these cases of emergency, which, as the report has shown, are more frequent than you would think.“
The certgate Smart Card is recommended by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI).
