It's now official: on Wednesday, Heidi Senger-Weiss, member of the Supervisory Board and partner at Austrian logistics service provider Gebrüder Weiss, was the first woman to be inducted into the logistics pantheon amid much jubilation.
150 guests of honour from the worlds of politics, science, industry and the media accepted the invitation of the Logistics Hall of Fame to celebrate the successful and inspirational logistics entrepreneur in the historic Erich Klausener Hall of the German Transport Ministry in Berlin. The glass-and-metal membership certificate was presented by Dorothee Bär, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, and Member of the German Bundestag Parliament.
Heidi Senger-Weiss' husband, Paul Senger-Weiss, held a moving congratulatory speech in honour of the new member of the Logistics Hall of Fame. He described his wife as a family entrepreneur through and through, someone who always thinks in terms of generations and who never reacted hastily to quarterly financials. He outlined how she took over a regional freight forwarder in the 15th generation and worked in a team setting to successfully develop the firm into an international company. "With her expertise and commitment, my wife furthered the cause of the Gebrüder Weiss company and of the entire logistics sector, helping to underpin its key status in society and industry. Despite her success, she has always had both feet firmly on the ground, also with a constant awareness for the demands of her second job, namely as a mother of three children", Senger-Weiss emphasised in his speech.
The interesting programme also featured words of tribute from private and professional companions, including Klaus Hellmann, Managing Partner at Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, and Wolfgang Niessner, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss.
The Austrian is the 19th member of the international logistics pantheon. She was elected in September by an international expert jury from a total of 31 candidates from seven countries. Members of the Logistics Hall of Fame include entrepreneur and logistics benefactor Klaus-Michael Kühne as well as the contract logistics pioneers Heinz Fiege and Hugo Fiege, long-time President of the German Association of Road Haulage, Logistics and Disposal (BGL) Hermann Grewer, Dortmund-based logistics researcher Michael ten Hompel, the long-time CEO of BLG, Detthold Aden, BVL founder Hanspeter Stabenau and other innovative professors. The other major figures posthumously voted into the Hall of Fame include Gottlieb Daimler, inventor of the truck, William Tunner, the man who organised the Berlin Airlift, Gottfried Schenker as a pioneer of combined transportation, Eugene Clark, the inventor of the forklift truck, Malcom McLean, father of containerisation, and Japanese Toyota manager Taiichi Ohno, who invented the just-in-time concept.
The initiative is supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport as well as the relevant sector associations, media and companies, including the Port of Duisburg (duisport), logistics insurer Kravag, the Fahrzeugwerk Bernard Krone company, intralogistics provider Still, the Federal Central Cooperative for Road Transport (SVG) and the TimoCom freight exchange.
