NanoEurope 2006 has opened – focus on new industries

(PresseBox) (St.Gallen, ) For three days the NanoEurope in St. Gallen, Switzerland will focus on nanotechnology in the new industries textiles, plastics and medical technology. The fair with conferences was opened on Tuesday, 12 September. Until 14 September a few thousand visitors will find out about the latest industrial trends.

At the NanoEurope 2006 from 12 to 14 September in St. Gallen/Switzerland exhibitors from the fields of nano and microtechnology will display their new developments, which are set to trigger a new surge in growth particularly in the textiles, plastics and medical technology industries. The NanoPubli is organised parallel to this and will demonstrate the possibilities of nanotechnology in a vivid way.

The market of the future

“Nanotechnology is the market of the future," said Nano expert Wolfgang Heckl with conviction. Heckl is the spokesman of Excellence Network NanoBioTechnology (ENNaB), a network of up-and-coming research groups and companies from Bavaria, whose fields of work/operating areas lie in the interdisciplinary field of nano and nanobiotechnology. It is essential to make the innovation potential of junior staff more useful for industrial applications. The NanoEurope is an ideal hub for this.

Practice-based and concrete

The director of the organiser Olma Messen St. Gallen, Hanspeter Egli, emphasised the new orientation of the NanoEurope2006: “The potential of nano and micro technology is extremely large; both research and industrial applications are posting high growth. With the aim of organising the transfer of knowledge in a more practice-oriented and concrete way, the conferences this year will mainly concentrate on the three key industries of medical technology, plastics and textiles.” With the second international conference Nano Regulation, NanoEurope will be promoting the safe application of nanotechnology. The combination of fair and conferences with regard to content offers conference participants, exhibitors and visitors a unique opportunity to obtain a picture of the current state of nano and micro technologies.

Varied conferences

Jakob Göldi, President of the Nano-Cluster Lake Constance gave an overview of the varied conference programme, which will be integrated in the fair in a visitor-friendly way. The seminars on Tuesday, 12 September will concentrate on medical technology – for example, on diagnostics, implants or therapies. On Wednesday, 13 September the focus will be on applications in the plastics industry - for example, in the motor industry or the electronics and packing industry. On Thursday, 14 September the claims of functional textiles which are, for example, odour-resistant or offer thermal control will be discussed.

Nano for “the average consumer“

Walter Muster, board member of the Swiss Materials Testing Institute (Empa) provided information on the opportunities and risks of nanotechnology; they will be examined in detail at the NanoPubli, the free parallel event for "the average consumer". As one of the few research institutes, the Empa concerns itself with the risks of nanotechnology together with partner institutes. The “NanoPubli” looks at the concrete top performances of everyday products that would scarcely exist without nanotechnology. In doing so, considerable attention will be paid to the health and environmental aspect. The special show inserts of the “NanoPubli” and the prepared film material are designed to bring nanotechnology closer to visitors.
