Fujitsu Included in «Low-Carbon and Environmental Leadership in the ICT Industry» Independent Study

Report emphasizes the importance of ICT environmental sustainability

(PresseBox) (Regensdorf/Tokyo, ) The most detailed independent assessment of Green credentials ever carried out examines vendors driving initiatives to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHG) of ICT, underlining companies with a global focus on sustainability. Fujitsu is proud to be among these vendors.

A new report published by research firm Gartner and WWF, «Low-Carbon and Environmental Leadership in the ICT Industry by Gartner and WWF, 2010», provides comprehensive rankings for ICT vendors in five headline categories, based on extensive research. Fujitsu is ranked as number 1 in 2 of the 5 categories: <Transformation of IT> and <Internal Environmental Performance>.

The Gartner and WWF study examines how 19 participating technology and service providers are responding to customer needs today - and in the future - by focusing on GHG reduction.

Drawing on a 20-plus year commitment towards environmental protection, Fujitsu is focused on Green ICT throughout the entire product lifecycle - from basic technology research and development, to product design and operation, and through to operating recycling services in countries throughout the world. Fujitsu's global green IT initiative, Green Policy Innovation, aims to achieve a cumulative reduction in worldwide CO2 emissions of more than 15 million tons over the four-year period from fiscal 2009 through fiscal 2012. During fiscal 2009, Fujitsu achieved a global reduction of 2.37 million tons, exceeding the target of 2.13 million tons.

Fujitsu is committed to delivering products that enable customers to reduce their environmental footprint and meet their own sustainability commitments. The company's research and development arm, Fujitsu Laboratories, has already started measuring the potential carbon reduction effect of all technologies under development, and during the last fiscal year, more than half the new products introduced worldwide by Fujitsu were awarded «Super Green» status or three stars under the Green IT labeling scheme, meeting the company's highest criteria for environmental consciousness.

Fujitsu has also taken the lead in helping customers to both gain a better understanding of and to reduce the GHG footprint from their ICT equipment. In addition to Fujitsu's own stringent Green IT labeling, examples include the 0-Watt range of monitors, PCs and servers, and the PRIMERGY CX1000 cloud server, which sets new standards in datacenter economics by optimizing the operating cost drivers of power, heat and space.

Active lead in Green ICT initiatives and enabling customers to reduce GHG emissions

Fujitsu takes an active lead in Green ICT initiatives around the world - with representation on all significant working groups on carbon reduction, including the Green Grid, the European Union initiative ICT4EE, Climate Savers Computing Initiative, the Copenhagen Communiqué on Climate Change, the Japan Climate Leaders' Partnership (Japan-CLP), EPEAT, Energy Star, Blue Angel, Nordic Swan and the German BITKOM Green IT Alliance.

Around the world, Fujitsu is working with customers to develop and implement solutions that deliver immediate and longer-term GHG reductions. In just one example, in Finland, Fujitsu has delivered national electronic prescription centre and patient record to the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela). The project aims to facilitate effective information exchange between healthcare service providers, and opens an e-access service to citizens enabling them to receive electronic prescriptions, view their own health information and to reduce visits to health services caused by lack of information. Electronic prescriptions and access to patient records help to reduce the need for printed paper and film-based patient records, and Fujitsu has also deployed electronic health record projects in Canada and Spain.

«We welcome the findings from this Gartner and WWF report as an independent affirmation of Fujitsu's long-term commitment to environmental initiatives, and will help customers to better understand which ICT vendors are truly leaders in Green ICT,» says Atsuhisa Takahashi, President, Corporate Environmental Strategy Unit at Fujitsu. «In the future we foresee a world where carbon emission metrics can be sensed, measured and displayed in real time, helping to manage our activities as they relate to the global environment.»

Alison O'Flynn, Global Executive Director Sustainability, Global Business Group, Fujitsu says: «We applaud Gartner and the WWF for undertaking this extensive research that provides the greater transparency into how far the IT industry has come with regard to addressing sustainability and the transition to a low carbon economy.»
